can you charge lappy bat outside the lappy

Someone at work fried my boses lap battery interface by pluging the wrong power supply in. Lappy worked intill bat died. Now if you plug the orignal power supply in you just get a burning smell. I want to charge the battery so i can use it He bought another one and gave me this one solo 1150http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Solo_Series/P1150/P115002.shtml Is there anything i can do to get this working without spending $100's on a repair job. The local repair shops want to charge $50-$100 just to look at it.

I know they used to make external battery chargers for old thinkpads (back in the PI era). But I have never seen anything similar for Gateways.

You may have to wind up just buing a new battery. However, this may not be a good solution as it is possible the charging circutry within the laptop is messed up (although a lot of the time this is in the battery itself, so you may be ok).

Thanks for the reply I am almost shure it is the charging circutry in the laptop. It smells like a burnt resistor or capasitor coming from the corner where the plug is at. I have removed the battery and there is no smell from it. . i was hoping one could just hotwire the power cord to the battery but i know with these things it is never that simple (OVERCHARGE = DEAD!!)

Actually according to the specs it uses a NIMH battery. It *MIGHT* be possible to recharge it without the laptop, unlike a Lithium Ion battery which would be dangerous to even attempt to charge without the proper charger. If you have a charger designed to recharge 10 cell NIMH batteries you could hook it to that. Another idea is you could take the battery apart (carefully) and maybe hook up a normal 1-2 cell charger to 1 or 2 cells at a time. Of course these are just temporary solutions.

this may not be what your looking to do but you could always try and find a docking station. i know some people who have broken the charging assembly on their IBMs and have just used them hooked to a docking station. kinda defeats the purpose of having a laptop though. who knows, you might get it to charge the battery hooked up to a docking station.

im not particulary familiar with the specific model laptop your talking about so forgive me if my suggestion is a bit vague.
