Usenet is like a large city, it has many different areas where you find many different things. Like a big city it has its educational areas (cbts) an arts section (mp3, movie and ebook groups) and it has its own large red light district (alt.binaries.erotica.whatever). Where u go is up to you...but just like in a real city you can get hurt / mugged (with viruses) in any of the areas but the bad guys are mostly found in the red light district.

well there's also NNTP:// it's a protocol, it's been around since before there was web pages, there are servers everywhere, and on these servers there are channels, and in these channels there are bots, where you can send a request to download stuff from... it's also good for getting other crazy stuff like credit card numbers, porn site passwords, etc...

usenet is just a really good newsgroup server that has lots of crap and is widely used, but even your isp has a newsgroup server...no telling if it's any good though...

ha your right, it's been so long, irc and newsgroups ran together in my thinking... yes irc uses bots and what nots, and newgroups is just that... newsgroups... and in these are files you can obtain, usually broken into parts...

irc is cool as shit too though.

and newgroups is just that... newsgroups... and in these are files you can obtain, usually broken into parts...

Just to be more specific, in these can be text encoded binary files. But also legitimate discussion groups tailored to specific topics, that are often logically organized. (i.e. sci.bio.botany, rec.autos.4x4, rec.scuba, etc...)
