Can You Fry a Retail Chip (by O'cing) and Still Get A Replacement from Intel?

Let's just say you wanted to overclock a chip to a certain speed say a RETAIL Celeron 566 to 850MHz and it doesn't reach it. Can you purposely fry the chip and return it to Intel to get a replacement in hopes of getting a chip that does overclock to 850MHz? If you return a chip in general that's been fried from overclocking to they know that it was fried because of overclocking or will they honor their 3 year warranty?

If you buy a Toyota Celica and it won't do 122 MPH (only 118) can you wrap it around a tree and then ask toyota to give you a new one 'cause the first one got broken?

So they have methods of proving it was overclocked then? What if you say that the CPU was causing problems when you installed it when your previous CPU was having things work fine?

no, unless there is obvious damage to the chip (black smoke marks etc) Intel cannot tell if it has been oc'ed or not. BUT oc'ing does void the warrany, and if you burn a CPU its your fault so you shouldnt really return it...

intel's including amd are totally against overclocking. it's very unlikely that a cpu's gonna get fried by being operated at recommended range, and they know that. another explanation that you could use is that there wasn't a heatsink on them, but this will also make it your fault for improper use, so there's not a likely way out of this one.

If the cpu gets damaged through oc'ing and there are no visible markings on it, i doubt it whether intel or amd or anyone can proove it was oc'ed. So, yes, it is a matter of 'morals'. Then again 3 months ago a piii 550 costed what a piii 750 costs today, and probably they both have the same production costs, and that is a matter of 'market forces' and there is not much morality involved in that. So ...

I would just sell the chip you've got and then go to a local retailer and buy an OEM chip. If it doesn't run at 100 FSB return it to the shop and say it would not work because your board wasn't compatible. First make sure that they will accept returns on OEM chips. It seems that some places are a little more liberal in letting you return OEM chips vs retail chips(within a reasonable timeframe). Bad thing is you'd have to find a different store if you wanted to try it again. Although this may not be moral either, it would certainly be better than frying the chip and returning it.

Better yet, look in the "For Sale" forum here at Anandtech and look for someone selling a Celeron II that overclocks to 100 FSB.

Here you go. This may be more than you're looking to spend, but here's Cell II 600 that should run at 900. Price may seem a slight bit high but it looks like this chip has a little bit of headroom if you only want 100 FSB.

Better yet, a Cell II 633@950 for $99.

I recently bought a P3-750. It wouldn't even hit 900 at 1.65, so I upped it to 1.7, then 1.75. Bam! Whaddya know? My cpu is fried. I dunno why, I've heard of people having voltages much higher than that. So, rather than waste $200 of my hard-earned money, I called Intel, told 'em my CPU was fried, and all my specs. I was using an Abit Slotket 3, and they seemed to think that was the problem. Never even brought up overclocking. I got my RMA slip in the mail yesterday, and I'm gonna send the chip back tomorrow .

Zedfu: Both companies (or at least AMD) aren't against hobbyists overclocking, they are against companies that take a T-Bird 900 and overclock it to 1200, selling it as a 1200 without any indication it was a 900.

Overclocking leads to a bunch of kids trying to return damaged parts. Why would they support such a thing? They lose money from it in many ways.
