It seems clear one will be able to get an upgrade price for moving from XP Pro to Vista Business, or XP Media Center to Vista Home Premium, but what Vista versions can one get favorable pricing for if coming from Win 2K? What might the prices be?

Microsoft: Upgrade Planning for Windows Vista

"You can upgrade from your current edition of Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 to a corresponding or better edition of Windows Vista by purchasing and installing an upgrade copy of Windows Vista. Depending on which edition of Windows you are running and the edition of Windows Vista you would like to install, you have two options for the installation process.....

Notes:
If you are currently using Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional x64, you are eligible for an upgrade copy to a corresponding or better edition of Windows Vista, but a clean install is required.

For versions of Windows earlier than Windows 2000, upgrade copies are not available. These earlier versions of Windows require you to install a full copy of Windows Vista.

If the edition of Windows Vista that you choose to install will result in a loss of functionality over your current edition of Windows, a clean install must be done or the installation must be completed to a new partition on your PC."

Yeah, I'd imagine that they'd offer the upgrade for 2k also since it's basically the same as XP.

No, and the question wasn't actually related to that.

MS typically allows an upgrade for at least 2 generations back- IIRC XP's upgrade was for 2k, Me, and 98SE. In this case, they're only allowing XP and 2000.

In the past you couldn't upgrade from 2000 to XP Home, you had to buy Pro ... so now you can upgrade from W2K to Vista Home ??

Microsoft's Upgrade Chart, displayed in the link I gave above, shows that you can go from W2K to ANY version of Vista. At least, that's what the chart says.....

In fact, you can go "upgrade" from ANY version of XP to ANY version of Vista if you are willing to do a clean install.

Why would you ever want to own an upgrade version of any OS? Doesn't that mean to use that disc again in the future you'd need to have your old OS installed first?

No.

But you would need to keep the old OS CD around for verification.

Because it wasn't an upgrade, unless you own a copy of 'Windows 2000 home edition' right next to your copy of 'Windows XP Server.'

There is no upgrade to Ultimate, maybe as there is no comparible previous version.

With XP to do the clean install with the Upgrade version you just start it like you would a full version on a wiped HD. During the installation it asks for the previous Windows disc, you put it in, and it gets checked. You do not need the CD-Key.

I am unsure if that is the same with Vista, or if you will need the CD-Key this time around.
