It's just a high frequency monotone.

after thinking about this, i'm confused. when this thing goes off and the whole class starts going "what the hell is that!?" or "it hurts my ears!" how is that supposed to make it less conspicuous (sp?)?

like chucky said, why not just use vibrate?

I can hear it and I'm 20. My mom is 45 and she was able to hear it when I turned it up.

I'd like to note that I can't hear it on my Logitech Z-640 computer speakers with the volume cranked up. However, I can hear it clear as day on the HT system listed in my sig. So it may be a speaker issue for some of you and not any lack of hearing.

That's what I was thinking as well.. Makes no damn sense.

I doubt I could have heard it at age 22 after working around jets for 4 years in the Navy.

It pierces my frickin skull!
I blasted it on my speakers here at work and I can hear people down the hall saying, "What the f*ck is that?!"

We should make this our fire alarm...it'll be a pretty good way to get rid of all the dead weight old people that are just waiting for retirement.

I was going to say the exact same thing. What phones don't have a vibrate function (except the 9500 and 9300 series of Nokia)?

Stupid really.

For those people that don't know what it sounds like, if you've heard an industrial laser cutting ,achine; that's the kind of sound it is.

Oh please, that's 15KHz. Want something that's actually tough to hear?

16.5KHz. Assuming your speakers can even produce that frequency at all.
Produced courtesy of Goldwave's function evaluator.
They've got a fully functional demo version. Try it out yourself and make your own high frequency whines and other fun noises.

Can't hear it at all. And I cranked my speakers all the way up.

Of course, I'm 38 and my ears have been trashed by countless rock concerts, nights in bars, military training, and girlfriends/wives.

Well, I could have gone higher, but my speakers can't do much in the way of 17KHz or higher. My cats confirm this. They react when I play sounds up to about 16.5HKz, but much higher than that, and they don't seem to care. I know I can hear higher than that, because I have heard the whine from various TVs, and some are probably around 18HKz.

Hm, ok, well I just tried something revolutionary: turning the volume really far up on the speakers. 18HKz - can still hear it. Anything higher than that, and the speakers make a weird buzzing noise around 100Hz.
Logitech z-640's BTW.
