You should worry more about your grammar than plagarism.

Nope, thats just cheating, not plagiarizing.

If you wanted to be honest and make sure it was ok you could ask the prof, otherwise its cheating.

Universities consider it a form of plagarism. However the consequences for self plagarism are typically no where near as severe.

If they run your paper through software that checks a database for identical work, you could get caught for that. I seem to recall Slashdot talking about this at one point.

Well then Universities don't quite grasp what the word plagarism means... "the unauthorized use or close imitiation of another author and the representation of them as ones own original work"

Representing your own work as your own work, kinda works

This question was asked at my uni (don't remember what occasion it was) and it depends. Like Wreckem said if you copy it word for word, yes it will be considered cheating/plagiarism. If you however rewrite it using the same ideas you should be OK.

I don't think it can be considered plagiarism, but it sure as heck can probably be construed as academic dishonesty. Which is, more than likely, not taken very lightly at most universities.

This is from the University of Washington's website:

Multiple submission is the practice of submitting a single paper for credit in two different classes (in the same quarter or in different quarters). The UW does not have a general policy prohibiting this practice. However, because an individual professor may not permit the practice in their class, a student wishing to make a multiple submission must clear it with both professors involved. Non-compliance will result in a violation of the University's standard of conduct.

Screw that, just update it, re-check for previous mistakes and add to it.

Screw any professor that doesn't think recycling is okay. Maybe they should get some original assignment ideas.

i agree

Recycling prior work MAY be okay, but the prof will probably want to know where you're adding to the work you've already done. In the past, I would suggest that the student provide a copy of the prior work so that I could clearly see whats going on. You got to realize that any half awake professor will be concerned that the prior work might in fact belong to someone else.

Yes, recycling a paper you've previously written violates a code of intellectual honesty that, I'm sure, is enforced at your school.
