I've now met three people who were never taught to read and write in cursive. It's not that they were dumb and didn't learn; the schools they attended dropped it from the curriculum. To them, cursive might as well be cuneiform.

I'm in my early forties. I typically write in cursive, my handwriting is not beautiful and has degraded a bit since secondary school though I think anyone with a functioning brain can read it, and I had no idea what cuneiform was until I read this thread and googled it.

Yes, I can write in cursive, wouldn't call it "beautiful", but I think it passes as legible. Not a particularly useful 21st century skill.

Have not done it in so long but yeah I can do it. Not very good at it though and way slower than typing. I grew up in an era where computers were not really a thing so pretty much everything was written, but only near the end did computers start to become more popular but lot of classes still wanted us to do stuff by hand. Computers were kind of seen as cheating. Even in a programming class in college I had one teacher insist we code on paper. That sucked. I don't code linearly like that, makes it very hard to jump around and change/add code. Thankfully at one point they let us use notepad at least. I think the point of doing it on paper was so we don't compile or use syntax highlighting etc.

As a side note my signature has evolved over the years too. I had to update something at my bank, don't remember what, but my signature from when I was like 8 was still on the document and yeah, I don't sign like that anymore.

My hand printing looks remarkably like cuneiform.

I write cursive pretty respectably - though I hesitate every so often, and recollect how to proceed, because I haven't done it in decades. I imagine the more automatic it becomes, the more of a mess it gets.

My handwriting is terrible. Never really learned to do it properly - somehow I missed it being taught, if it ever was (they really didn't teach much in school at all, you were pretty-much left to teach yourself if you wanted to learn anything). At school would write (extremely long) essays by "printing", that is, non-joined-up handwritting, which was seriously exhausting. Then I discovered typewriters and then computers and that was that, never really needed to learn handwriting.

I do slightly envy people with really elegant script, but I guess it's a pretty archaic sort of skill now.

I think I'm among the last generation that was taught cursive. I don't write in it, as it's not practical.

I don't really write anything at all, for that matter.

Aren't you in your early/mid 30s? Computers were definitely a thing, but I guess maybe not in the ass end of Canada where you live.

I was taught cursive in elementary school. Yes, we Millennials still posses knowledge of the ancients! -
Gen Z probably won't be able to.

I can relate to that...carpal tunnel syndrome (onset at 12 yo), arthritis by my 30s, and trigger finger tendonitis prevent me from writing more than a few sentences at a time now. By the time I finish writing out a check to pay bills...my hand is already starting to cramp and hurt.

I learned it in school where it was still being taught in the early to mid 80s. I could write in cursive by six years old, and was practicing calligraphy by the age of eight. I have/had nice handwriting...

I knew cursive was no longer being taught to school kids when friends of mine who had kids talked about it, how it was going to become uncommon knowledge and being left at the wayside because it just is no longer practical for regular use.

A bit sad imho, but I suppose I understand. No point in making people learn dead languages...nor unused/underutilized communication types.

Another 20 years, and cursive will look like wingdings to younger people, lol.

I’m 32, was taught cursive in school and use it regularly. None of my friends my age or coworkers use it and most have crap handwriting. I’ve always found it worthwhile to try to do well for no reason other than aesthetics.

I doubt it’s the same “official” cursive I was taught in school at this point but it looks nice and people say so on the rare occasion anyone but me sees my handwriting.

I used to know. I can read it no problem, but when I go to write it(as if *that* ever happens), I get hung up on some letters. My whole professional life I've printed all caps, and mostly numbers. The only thing I handwrite anymore is my signature, and that's degenerated into a squiggly line.

I rarely write anything by hand at all these days... it's so tedious and laborious compared to typing.
