true?? or not? it's always looked that way to me.

Interesting. Well I can vouch for the skinny one. 6'3", 135 lbs, and about as low of a voice as they come. Baritone is high for me. It's actually always upset me that I couldn't sing at the same octave as the guys in Van Halen. I talk with a very low voice as well, 'baritone' if I'm in an upbeat or excited mood. My Dad likes to make fun of me- I'll walk into the room when I'm home and say "Good morning" and he'll respond back in a totally sarcastic "GOUUUD MOUUUURNINGG, CHRUUUS".

Jzero, you were in a Christian A Cappella group in college? So was I! My college had this one group that was sort of an institution at the school - not a school-sponsored group, but they had been going for ten years or so, changing out singers all the time when people graduated. My friend and I tried to get in, but there wasn't any room, so we started our own group. We wrote our own music and arranged many songs for ourselves. Ah, the memories I sang bass on most songs, but took second tenor (melody) on at least two of our songs (I figured out in college that I have a four and a half octave range).

Now I sing in church every Sunday. I just bought this new guitar (Taylor 614ce), and I generally sing the melody parts to help lead the congregation, but sometimes harmonizing. On perormance songs (as opposed to congregational songs) I generally sing the lead part if it's a guy's part.

And I agree to a point on the bigger guy, higher voice theory. I'm 6'7", about 300 lbs, and I sing high sometimes, but I also have a lower voice than anyone else that I've ever sang with. I generally sing bass on most songs (I was second bass, which is the low bass, in choir in college).

That's cool! Mind if I send you a private e-mail?

I was the only male in my group my first year, so I sang bass, bass and more bass, but I'm really a tenor. The next year I was able to recruit some guys, so I could actually sing tenor

I sing alot and don't mind doing it in public at all. Friends say I have a pretty good voice but I tend to get a little too carried away and break out with a high pitched voice sometimes hehe.

Cool, a mixed gender group....we never thought of trying that. Well, at least while singing....

Yeah, go ahead and send away....the address in my profile is my home address.

Some interesting reading in this thread so far....

Yesterday I went to a resturant with my nephew. "Hotel California" came on and we spontaneously started singing (I already had a margarita and was finishing a bud - so it was easy). Then I noticed ALOT of people in the restaurant was trying to sing along.

Yep. I used to sing and play in bands. If you think you can at least hold a pitch, here's a trick that will increase your vocal power and fill out your voice:

While standing, place your hand on your abdomen, and inhale deeply as if you were about to sing. If your chest and shoulders rise, you're breathing incorrectly.

Try it again, only this time, focus on making your abdomen (diaphragm) expand. When you get it, sing a note, or just speak. You should hear the difference, immediately. Practice breathing this way until it becomes your natural method of breathing.

Whether your voice naturally sounds musical, and singing on key and with style is another story, but you will be amazed how much more power you have in your voice. Once you can do this regularly, the only down side is that remembering that your natural voice is now much louder, you are, so you have to be careful not to blow out your friends' ears in regular conversation.

I don't sing (other than in the car, heh heh), but I think I can do a fair job. I played trumpet for 7 years in school, so I can at least hear a tone. I don't sing enough to find a tone on my own, but if I'm sitting or standing beside someone who can, I can match them and sound pretty good. At least, I think so.
