Sure you can use them to pick stuff up, but a lot of people look awkwards (particularly non-Asians).
However, can you use chopsticks w/o CROSSING your chopsticks? That's the correct way (middle finger in between) and you can make the clicking noise with the two chopsticks. If you can do that then you're doing it right. As an Asian, I'm a disgrace. I was born in the US, but even my parents who came from Asia can't do it =(. So I guess I never learned properly so my fobby friends laugh at me.
