Can you use the power switch on the PS to turn on the computer?

Can you do this?, I don't have any ATX motherboard power switch to turn on my new home made system, I just ordered a Enermax 430 and it has a on/off switch on it I think. Can you use it instead of putting in a front case power button and switch?

'Fraid not. A "power good" signal from the mainboard is needed before an ATX PS will turn on. AFAIK, the only way to get this signal is with a regular ATX momentary-on power switch that's on the front of ATX cases.

Actually, yes you can.....BUT I dont recomend it. The thing with anATX power supply is that as long as there is power going to it, it is always in on mode unless there is the momentary switch mentioned above. Which allows the user or OS to be able to power off the supply through the mobo. If your desperate and lucky enough to have an old atx case laying around empty just pull the switch out of that and find a way to use it in your case like I did. When I converted an AT case into an atx . But you can do it without the momentary release ATX switch, the problem is it is really hard on the power supply as the switch built into the PS is really only for surge protection or to keep your youngans from turning on your computer. And also as a safty measure while working on your computer. But if you use that to turn your puter on and off your PS will only last about 6 months and end up being a waste of money on a good supply.

If you have any old switches laying around, you can use those. I'm talking about old reset switches, turbo buttons, etc.. As long as it can bridge the two pins on the motherboard, it'll work. I did this when I swapped an old AT power supply with an on/off switch for a new ATX ps -- I just ripped the reset switch from an old AT case I had in the basement and voila, power switch.

As for the on/off switch issue, pre-ATX standard computers have been using hard power switches to turn computers on and off for ages. Unless I'm missing something here (which is highly possible), it should be okay.

I think we need more details to answer your question. It sounds like you need some kind of switch to jumper the two POwer-on jumpers on the motherboard. You should be able to hook these up to the "reset" button on your case, making the reset button the new power on/off switch. Reset buttons are nice for this, since they have the same feel as an ATX power button. You can use the power supply switch for a hard reset of the system.

If you have an MSI pro 2 a,there is an option in the bios that will power the PC on after a power failure. This will do it,but i still recommend getting a switch,at radio shack for about two bucks. If you shut down by simply killing the power, you are likely to loose information and will have to see scandisk every time.
