Canada is blaming illegal guns on the USA.

Maybe Canada has a chance at freedom. Is all not well in Canada in their Utopian Socialist Society?

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/americas/12/27/canada.crime.ap/index.html

What do you think?

One thing I know is that people commit crimes, not guns. This is a breakdown of society, not a gun committing a crime. Maybe there is organized crime going on in Canada, they are unwilling to admit or fight.

dude, speak for yourself, you have no idea what a gun all by itself can do... i was viciously attacked by a gang of guns on my way to my car one time... after beating me almost to passing out, they took turns getting in my face to watch me squirm...

/sarcasm

you don't see stories like the one I just posted, for for one simple reason:
guns are inanimate objects, just like all weapons, they cannot do anyone harm without help from people

if you wanna make the world safer, give everyone guns and let them shoot it out, people who refuse to fight die, and those who are not good enough die, the remaining people will realize that everyone around them is armed and that it would be pretty idiotic to try something dumb, like rob/mug/rape/murder

until you are willing to go to those lengths, people will continue to be victimized by others who want power, money, etc.

While I disagree with the mayor and other officials here, I think it's fair to say that while guns don't commit crimes, people without guns don't shoot people.

What...they stab them instead?

lol, it's very true, that with no gun there wouldn't be a shooting death... but tighter gun laws won't affect that, if you're gonna kill someone, you probably aren't concerned about the jail time you'd do for illegal arms purchase, not to mention, they murderer probably considers all the paperwork that could link them to the crime, a back alley cash deal is impossible to trace

OK... Now to pick apart the article...

"It's a sign that the lack of gun laws in the U.S. is allowing guns to flood across the border that are literally being used to kill people in the streets of Toronto," Miller said.
A lack of gun laws? Is Marion Barry the Prime Minister of Canada? 20,000 gun laws and he accuses us of having a lack of gun laws? Bwaahahahahaha

The escalating violence prompted the prime minister to announce earlier this month that if re-elected on January 23, his government would ban handguns. With severe restrictions already in place against handgun ownership, many criticized the announcement as politics.
Duh... First, (per the quote) Canada already has strict anti-gun laws. Second, if it's so important why does he have to wait until he is re-elected to push for the legislation? "Meh... It can wait a couple months..."

This guy is unreal. Once again, it's all our fault.

That's a rather stupid claim to make.

As for 'they stab them instead', the result is less dead people, and almost no 'innocent bystanders'.

Quote anecdotes all you like, the statistics of the matter show that having a gun does not make you safer, and everyone having guns makes you much less safe.

You can argue for a 'right to bear arms' from a simple 'civil rights' perspective, and that's fine, but the arguments from 'safety' and 'protection' are not supported by the evidence.

I was being sarcastic when i said giving everyone a gun would solve the problem, it wouldn't but I think an educated, armed public would reduce violent crime, by many times... look at switzerland, they have mandatory army service over there, and when you leave the service you get to keep your equipment, including your rifle, 3/4 of swiss homes have an assault rifle, and their violent crime rate is very low

That has to be the most bogus comparison ever. Switzerland is small. Its society is homogeneous compared to the US. I have never read about a US style ghetto in Switzerland. No Crips or Bloods there and it isn't because of mandatory military service.

Canada is getting its first dose of it. I give credit to Canada for resisting the influence for so long while being in such close proximity to it.

The problem is Asian and Indo Youth Gangs running wild in the greater Toronto Area. It seems the Cops are more interested in going after Motorcycle Clubs than they are the real criminal element there.

Certainly the ease of availability in the US is the major factor, but we can't rely on the US to solve the problem. Tougher laws against Gun possession/use, smuggling, and tougher enforcement are what's part of the solution.

Yeah, but Switzerland has a higher gun rate per capita then the US.

They are getting a lot more crime in Toronto because of drugs - not guns. Welcome to our meth headed and pot smoking world!

Gun control: Breath deeply, hold, squeeze.

Everyone point their finger at the police, but where is the judicial system? There are pretty serious penalties, but sentencing tend to go soft, I say automatic maximum. A bigger problem, and harder to fix at that, is the erotion of parental control over the youth. It's the live fast die fast punk kids that is creating all this problem. At least in the good old days, the violence is kept down because it is simply not good for (drug) business.

It's the Drug Trade, not drugs per se. Drugs need to be removed from the Underground economy, to remove the major source of Income from the gangs. Unfortunetly(for Canada) legalization/regulation can't be done without the US doing it too. The Drug Trade in Canada is mainly geared toward Export to the US and not for Domestic Consumption.

Funny you mention that. There is some argument that all of the HA busts in the past years have contributed to the recent rash of street violence. When the HA takes over, the street punks are the first to go.

To say that gun problems in Canada are ONLY the result of being close to the US would be false for certain. To say that the US is the primary manufacturer of weapons in North America would be nothing more than stating fact. I agree that by legalizing all drugs you would dramatically cut funding for organised crime. Canada has almost as high a percentage of weapons as the US with the main difference being rifles vs handguns and yet our violence due to weapons is amazing low (compared to the US naturally).

The least intelligent comment I've read in a long time must go to AragornTK who says, "... I think an educated, armed public would reduce violent crime, by many times..." LOL.. that's rich.
