Li then beheaded McLean and started parading up and down the bus brandishing the man's severed head.
As the bus ground to a halt and horrified passengers scrambled to get out, Li continued to stab, mutilate and dismember McLean. Witnesses reported seeing Li eat pieces of the man's body and lick blood from his fingers.

To be fair, we think he did it accidentally.
Psychiatrists testified at his trial that Li was schizophrenic and suffering a major psychotic episode at the time of the killing.
Li heard voices from God telling him that McLean was an evil threat that needed to be eliminated, the psychiatrists said.
This is a dangerous person who is clearly of no value whatsoever to society. He should be executed.

I tend to agree that although he may have been not guilty due to mental illness, he should never be allowed out in public again.

I think that's more of a perspective issue - I don't think that particular individual's life has value. It's not an innate thing that everyone is entitled to - If i drop brain dead from a brain aneurism this very moment, there'd be no value in my vegetative state either.
In general bad policy is justified by the "value of human life" angle - think abortion policy etc.
I think when you butcher and eat your busmate that you no longer deserve to be considered human and should be put down like the animal you are.

And we find it interesting that you would be fine denying a women's right to make choices about her own body with the excuse of protecting a life that doesn't yet exist. But would gladly give the state power to murder a mentally ill human being who is too sick to realize what they did was wrong.
I have no problems with abortion. How else are we going to ensure idiots dont have 30 kids with 11 women
