Friend of mine got speeding ticket in New York (she's from Canada). What are her options?

From what I understand, she can shrug it off and not pay, however she will be arrested next time she goes to New York.

Does anyone know of any cross-border information exchange that might take place?

Is it really worth having a black mark on her record? Just pay the fine.

Contest it by mail if you can; the court may just look at her Canada address and let it go, figuring they'll never see the money anyway.

That's how I got out of a parking ticket in NY, which I fully deserved...I wrote in a polite, well-worded explanation of why I had parked there, and that I didn't know about the whole street cleaning thing...they let it go without a word. I wouldn't have paid anyway

I had a speeding ticket in Portland, OR 4 years ago. They mailed me a few times requesting payment, but I never got around to sending payment. I've been to Portland since a couple times and rented vehicles, but luckily, I wasn't pulled over for a traffic infraction, otherwise I'd be going straight to jail.

Tell your friend to stop trying to weasel out of responsibility for her actions. Pay the damn fine and be done with it.

I wasn't asking for ethical advice.. I was asking for a list of consequences. The ticket does not have a set amount on it, basically it was going 60/mph in a 40/mph "safety zone"

can the Canadian ministry of transportation do anything with this? If she is not planning on going back to new york then there is really no need to pay this ticket.

If your friend likes being an immature douche, then by all means don't pay the ticket. They aren't coming here to arrest you.

Agreed, she comes to the US, she must respect our laws.

New York is one of the states in which Canada (Quebec and Ontario) has agreed to allow enforcement of traffic violations. If she does not pay, it will reflect in her Canadian DOT (Canadian Ministry of Transportation) records.

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/demerit.htm

Specifically the section that reads, "Drivers convicted of a driving related offence in the State of New York, the State of Michigan or any Canadian province or territory, will have home jurisdictional penalties such as demerit points and/or suspensions applied to their Ontario driver record as if the offence occurred in Ontario."

Gosh yes. Why should Canucks be any different than our neighbors to the south, who are so wonderful at respecting our laws? <rolls eyes>

Yeah, she should just buck up and pay the ticket. "if ya do the crime, ya gotta do the time"...
