Following the theft of £22 million from its money handling centre in Belfast on 22 December 2004, allegedly by the Provisional IRA, Northern Bank announced on 7 January 2005 that all its notes were to be recalled and reissued in different colours and styles, and using the bank's new logo.

There's something wrong with cotton? Don't get me wrong I can see some mild advantages, but counterfeiting isn't that widespread and I'd think plastic would be more expensive to produce, at least in the US where we have a ready abundance of cotton.

They would be more expensive to produce, but I don't think by that much.

And they become more econmic in the long term as they practially last forever. In practice a polymer note would probably last 3 to 4 times what a paper note would, so as long as they cost less than 4 times as much to produce you're in front.

Paper notes constantly need to be replaced in circulation.

They're just like paper notes. They bend, you can roll them up etc.

paper money is quite resilient. Lots of cotton. money in pockets survive wash and dry cycle rather well.

Paper != cotton. I've accidentally washed pants with money in the pocket multiple times, comes out just as usable as when it went in.
