The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have once again demonstrated their enthusiasm for the Taser by zapping an 82-year-old hospital patient, CBC News reports.

Frank Lasser, of Kamloops, British Columbia, was in his local Royal Inland Hospital on 3 May suffering from pneumonia following heart bypass surgery which obliges him to remain permanently connected to an oxygen supply.

The RCMP said that "nurses called police after Lasser became delirious and pulled a knife out of his pocket". When the Mounties arrived, the perp apparently refused to relinquish his weapon, at which point he was hit three times with a Taser.

Lasser recounted: "I was laying on the bed by then and the corporal came in, or the sergeant, I forget which it was, and said to the guys, 'OK, get him because we got more important work to do on the street tonight.' And then, bang, bang, bang, three times with the laser [sic], and I tell you, I never want that again."

In his defence, former prison guard Lasser said he "sometimes becomes delusional when he can't breathe properly" and admitted he "couldn't explain why he refused to let go of the knife even after the Mounties arrived".

Lasser insisted the three RCMP officers involved "could have easily handled him without the use of a Taser", concluding: "They could have gone in there and taken an old man without any trouble at all."

Not very polite of the Mounties. And from what I hear illegal since they didn't warn him in French as well as English.

So if an 82yo dude hooked up to oxygen lived through it, apparently they're not as lethal as some people make them out to be..

An 82 year old dude with heart and breathing problems lived through getting tazed 3 times? I think that ends the debate about lethality.

Doesn't make you less likely to die...you just get help quicker. If he went into cardiac arrest, I'm quite sure it would be in the headline.

true..but this does prove what many have been arguing. that cops go to them far to fast instead of trying to deal with the situation.

WHAT???

The man was brandishing a deadly weapon. I don't care who you are if you pull a knife on me I am not rushing you just to appease people. My life and health is worth more to me than people's whining.

How many people with knives are you willing to rush for a low paying public servant job???

yes i think that in many cases cops go for a taser far to fast.

I agree. A billy club might have been a little more appropriate in this case

What does this case have to do with that? This case proves nothing of the sort. This case is a perfect example of why tasers were adopted by law enforcement.

Exactly, I know a few 70-80 year old men that our still very strong for their age, and given the choice between rushing a man with a knife or zapping him I would choose the latter.

I think most people are rather disillusion about how lethal a knife is, esp in close quarters.

Heck, even if it's not lethal you still run a very real risk of some rehab if the guy gets a good stab into your arm. All the same, I wonder if anyone realized they're in a hospital and just might be able to tranquilize the guy, or turn off his oxygen until he passes out. Nah, that sounds too much like original thought, can't have any of that from an official institution you know.

And I still think this sounds like shens, but maybe not

Please. I'm sure given enough time anyone could dig up an article about a senior citizen surviving a gunshot wound, it doesn't prove guns aren't lethal.

Cops and Tazers are already a huge controversy up here. This incident just adds to the fire. I suspect Tazers are going to be banned, if not outright, then likely limited to certain Officers.

How about instead of rushing him OR tazing him, you simply stay back and let him tire himself out, genius? He was hooked up to an oxygen machine recovering from pneumonia, what the fuck was he going to do?

Just hang back and try to talk him down. If he tries to get up or something, THEN taze him. This was ridiculous.
