Did I miss this thread? Searched and did not find one...unless there is an obscure discussion going on in a different thread (if so, mods feel free to move/delete).

So what's going on up there? One side says it's a protest against mandates, the other calls it an insurrection/occupation of Ottawa. Normally my gut instinct would be that the truth is somewhere in the middle, but that recent list of "demands" sure read like they wanted more than just mandates removed, more like a handover of the government. And it seems like a lot of US groups are externally funding it. DHS warning that similar protests could pop up here during the Super Bowl, SOTU, etc.

Is this their "occupy wall street" moment, or will something bigger come of this? This awesome timeline never disappoints.

My perception is that there's a Venn diagram thing going on, some there against the mandates, others wanting the government to step down, and an overlap. Not sure how large the overlap section is.

They want Trudeau to lift the vaccine mandate, but apparently haven't figured out it is a U.S. mandate that drivers be vaxed, not a Canadian rule.

90-95% of Canadian drivers are already vaxed, Doh!

Fox news.

It's covered in various threads. Covidiots released a Memorandum of Understanding without understanding MOUs involve two parties.

It is a rule on both sides of the border. Even if by some miracle Trudeau caves, they still cannot cross the border. Real bright sparks.

Meanwhile they are hurting local businesses and trucking companies with their occupation of city centres and border crossings.

Auto plants are already hurting from supply chain issues and throw this on top means temporary layoff for auto workers.

Windsor - Detroit crossing handles like one third of all trade between the two countries.

I find it comical that US conservative support the blockades of streets in this instance but cheered when force was used during protests and justified the force because protestors were blocking traffic.

If it was me I would give them 24 hours to vacate. After which I would get heavy machinery and start ripping through the convoy. Destroying any truck that isn’t removed.

They've been doing stuff like this as well as harassing health care workers

BC had no issues driving them off, neither did Quebec, i wonder what's different about Ontario and Alberta?

Anyways they were strongly warned last night to leave or be arrested, today they were sternly warned to leave or be arrested!

This may be a protest in Canadian cities, but organizers have been tracked to MAGAtards. The donations that’s supposed to pay for fuel and food costs of these protestors but the money trail going back to the Proud Boys. And then we have your idiotic politicians supporting this protest. Stupid Americans blaming foreign countries interfering in your domestic affairs, we don’t want your trash antivax movement here.

This is one of the #Clownvoy's leading figures in Ottawa

their demands constantly shift, just a few days ago they wanted the government dissolved (there was an election in the fall), they got their kids with them as well, which is complicating matters
For some reason, I do NOT hear the Canadian Accent, shame he never said the word "about" strong indicator of being a "native resident"
I am from Detroit area, he definitely has a northern accent, like Michigan, WI, MN ect. Doesn't sound Canadian though.

I am not a fan of their cause, but I am a fan of their tactics. Liberals should learn from them.

This entire campaign has been astroturfed from the US, Russia, India and god knows where else. Yes, truckers are hurting. They’ve been hurting for years. A little social media engineering goes along way towards convincing them that a vaccine mandate is the last straw and one step above slavery. Ironic, considering their trucks will be driving themselves in the near future.

Not that near. We are probably going to go through a severe trucker shortage before we get to self driving anything. Liberals should encourage our essential groups (teachers, nurses, etc) to pull same hard-line tactics as conservatives are encouraging their groups to pull.

Well the decimation of the Unions did not help truckers as they thought it would. The owner operators or large trucking companies love it though.

Trucks won't be driving themselves in our lifetime. I digress.

How is this moron not in detrimental life instances for saying assassination of the Prime Minister is the only reasonable outcome?

There was a great snippet of the issue NPR yesterday don’t ask me the program.

but in a nutshell. It is like the scene in the life of Brian. Where they are in the arena and they are listing all the different factions Judah people front people front of Judah and etc.

all the truckers pretty much all have the same demands. Maybe slightly different…. So the government works it out with one group. But there are a dozen or so more groups that are there.

high level they are fucking idiots

We have been in a severe trucker shortage long before the pandemic (close to a decade) The pandemic just brought it front and center. And it's going to get worse and worse with all the DOT restrictions and the low wages.

It isn't a trucker shortage in the literal sense.
There are millions more CDL holders than jobs available.

It's a garbage-working-conditions-noone-wants-to-do-this-shit-for-shit-pay-and-hours problem.

Truckers don't get paid idling. They get paid per mile. If you're stuck at a dock waiting to load, you're spending time not getting paid - possibly losing money if you're idling for a while, burning lots of fuel.

Pay per mile worked great back in the day when dispatchers and companies had little in the way of tracking what trucks were doing. Pay per mile rewarded efficient drivers and crews.
Now trucks can be tracked every step of the way, driving a truck is easier and more fuel efficient (thanks to auto/DCT transmissions), and the barrier to entry is much lower in terms of who can drive. Trucking companies were petitioning the federal government to allow 18 year olds to be able to drive across state lines under supervision of an experienced driver. Currently I think it's minimum 21 with experience to do interstate trucking?
Trucking also has turnover as 90% per year in some areas. That's INSANE.
But companies continue to chew through drivers rather than provide better wages and conditions to retain drivers.

The race to the bottom to provide goods as cheap as possible is really a race to the bottom for wages and/or working conditions.

Protesting low wages, no benefits, and to rebuild their formerly gutted union to both restrict supply of drivers and improve working conditions would make much sense. Following crazy antivax insanity and putting other workers out of work, not so much

One trucker I know just wants to make a living and isn't part of any of that nonsense.

Anyways, the White House is now directly involved and focused on bringing this to an end. Probably because truckers have also blocked border crossings and US factories are shutting down due to the supply chain still being "just in time". Seems if you so much as sneeze you can shut this country down.

U.S. offers Trudeau government help to end border blockade
