Most reports put the best overall Canadian university (University of Toronto) ranked around 17 or 18th in North America. I'd guess it's the equivalent of Emory, Notre Dame type schools in prestige/ranking. Of course they're probably really different universities.

There is a book that they used to have, and probably still do, that has info on all of them and how others view them etc.

Ignore anything from Mcleans magazine. Its ranking is so biased as to not even warrant discussion (and I say that having gone to the school that they consistently rank as the best undergrad in the country).

Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with McClean's (I've skimmed through their rankings, but I didn't base any decision on them)?
Every year they have a white mustache from felating MTA. Even the year that MTA professors went on strike and came within a hair of losing the school year (1999) it still got rave reviews. In Mclean's eyes MTA can do no wrong.

bah school is school... I go to University of Ottawa for Economics than for Law. I got accepted to Toronto but actually going there and checking out the place, i prefered Ottawa. Im in my third year and couldnt be better. Sure i went to a "less" school than Toronto but law is law right...gonna end up somewhere making good money so in the end no choice is wrong!

MacLeans gives a general idea but if you look at their scores they put more weight on "word of mouth reputation" than on "faculty". So joe saying UofT is good gets more points than McGill having some world experts.

But honestly though, if you go to one of the bigger Canadian universities you're gonna get a good education. UBC, UofT, McGill, Queens, probably UofA too... it's not like the profs at the UofC don't know anything. Undergrad is mainly about the experience, so find a decent school in a place you think you'll enjoy.

U of A has turned out to be a great school and will continue to improve.

Oil and Gas companies inject a lot of money into the school. Also alberata is debt and deficit free, allowing for more spending in future years.
Education system in canada is a provincial jurisdiction.

It also depends what you plan on taking. Mac, Queen's, McGill, U of T for all around ; Waterloo for eng ; Western business ; Carleton aerospace and journalism....etc etc
