Last Halloween, I started having a sore throat. Lived with it for a few weeks, thinking it would eventually go away. It didn't. I finally went to the doctor and they prescribed me a zpack to get rid of any infection I might have.
It didn't work.
I made another appointment, and saw another family doctor at the clinic where I go because my doctor was out. He looked at my throat, didn't see anything, and prescribed me a zpack. I informed him we had already done this, and he followed up with giving me medicine for acid reflux. He was sure that was it.
I took it for 2 weeks with no change. It didn't work either.
So, I called back and asked for a referral to an ENT. By this time, its right after Thanksgiving. I got the referral, it took about 2 weeks to go in, and the ENT put this long scope down my throat and saw swelling that the other doctors couldn't see. He scheduled a biopsy which went off without a hitch about a week later, and it came back negative. No cancer. By this time, I'm having real problems swallowing and its bothering me all the time. I told him I wanted to get the lump removed and we scheduled a date, January 3rdish.
I had the surgery and felt a little better. Easier to swallow, but still sore and tender. Was told it would go away and for about a week, it did.
Then it came back with a vengeance. I was in a lot of pain and it was chalked up to the doctor having to remove some inflammation that had nerves bundled with it. It would heal I was told. It never did. January passes.. February comes and I have been referred to a neurologist to help identify why I'm having this "nerve" pain. He prescribes about 5 different medicines to try to help me. Each one take a week to 2 weeks to really get in my system and take effect. None of them work worth a crud. I feel like I'm having difficulty swallowing again and its affecting my sleep. "Normal" I'm told, as everything is healing. I don't buy it. I constantly press the ENT and neurologist for answers and was told these things take time.
In the meantime, I'm binging on ibuprofen, about 20 pills a day just to function, on a pain roller coaster. The neurologist doesn't want to prescribe any narcotics as nerve pain does not respond well to them. He puts me on amitriptaline, carbamezapine, and finally Lyrica to try to help me out. None of them work which is why I turned to the Ibuprofen.
Last week I told myself something had to change. I made another appointment with the ENT and with another neurologist. I told the ENT I wanted another CT scan and he wanted an MRI also. By this time, the pain is incredible. My headaches are all over my head, my neck feels like I've pulled every muscle in it as well, and my jaw is in intense pain. I'm sobbing daily due to the pain and can barely function. My left shoulder also feels like I've pulled it doing yard work. I can't sleep and haven't slept fully throughout the night in over two months. I'm a wreck.
The new neurologist explains I'm over medicating myself and am having rebound headaches and body aches. He cuts me cold turkey from the ibuprofen and puts me on 500 mg of naproxen sodium, 2x a day, and a muscle relaxer at night. I also get my MRI and CT scan.

Yesterday I'm told I have a tumor the size of a golf ball in the base of my tongue. I had a biopsy on it today where they go in and stick this huge needle in and pull out some cells. The doctors looked at it under a microscope and said it appears to be cancerous but they are sending it off to a lab to get it identified. I've known something was wrong for months and couldn't get anyone to help me with it. I'm so frustrated with this whole pain ordeal and not having anyone take me seriously when I've told everyone something wasn't right.

Anyway, had to get this off my chest. There are no cliff notes.

EDIT: I'm at the point where its extremely painful to eat. I'm eating soups and yogurt stuff now. I can't have burgers, chicken, anything rough that might be difficult to swallow. It's just too painful. My relief consists of sitting in the hot tub, taking hot showers, and sleeping with a heat pad on my shoulder/neck area.

I don't really have much to say other than that sucks and hope they can get it taken care of and get you some relief. That sounds like hell.

Good Luck.

Have had one skin cancer so far myself, caught it early.

Mine was just an odd mole on my nose, seems minor in comparison.

Hopefully they have it isolated now.

I've had increasing throat problems for a long time, but really bad for the last 2 months. I should see a doctor. I've been well aware that my LPR puts me at risk for throat cancer. Now OP has me thinking it might be too late for me too.

Best of luck, OP.

Thanks all. It feels good to write it all down. I'm hoping it is Squamous-cell carcinoma or a variant thereof. I don't drink or smoke, and this is one of the more common types and responds well to radiation. I don't have any hair to speak of except on my back so if I lose it, I'm ahead of the game. My family needs me to get better and I need to get better. The doctor is filling out my FMLA paperwork tonight and will fax it in tomorrow. It gives me up to 12 weeks off with full pay which would be very nice to have. I have to keep a positive attitude throughout all of this, even when I just want to break down.

Get it looked at. Insist on an ENT if they want to beat around the bush. Your health is worth it. I look forward to the day I can sleep comfortably again and won't take it for granted.

That's the right attitude; best of a luck.

Sucks, sorry to hear. Is it early enough that they should be able to remove it completely?

I hate when doctors dismiss stuff. Happens to my dad all the time because he has a heart condition so they automatically think it's heart related and nothing else, they'll do all the heart related tests and they'll pass then send him off. One time he had an issue and it turned out it was a medication he was taking that he was no longer suppose to take (doctor was suppose to tell him to stop taking it). It took 3 doctors and 3 separate visits for that.

The doctor said that cutting it out would in essence be like removing my tongue. It's like a golf ball in the middle of the tongue muscle where it goes down the throat. There are surgeries I could have to regraft new muscle in, etc, but it would never be the same. HE's hoping that it is the kind that responds well to radiation. Time will tell.

D:

Tongue would be a tough thing to give up. I could handle not being able to talk, but not tasting would be difficult.

Friend of the family went through something similar but didn't get as desperate as you were. I mean, it took awhile for them to find it and they had been treating him for other things for several weeks without resolution but then they found the malignant tumor in his neck, I believe it involved his tongue but not certain of it. Had surgery to remove it, I think he had radiation but not chemo and is completely recovered, feeling great, other than the normal complications of age being in his 60s. That was four years ago.

Good luck and stay positive! Oh and I call shens on that guy who said opiates aren't a good choice for "nerve" pain. It's pretty much the only thing that works for some types of nerve pain. Ask most people with severe post-herpetic neuralgia or CRPS what works best for them. It's ridiculous that a doctor won't let you decide what works for your pain and decides for you.

Damn dude really sorry to hear about your problem!

If possible I strongly suggest you consult at least one additional cancer specialist.
