Decided to pick up a can as I seen someone on the Food Network use them in a dish. I had it for lunch and I gotta admit, it was actually really good. Spread a little cream cheese on a cracker and top with an oyster = YUMMMMMM .

Anyone like canned oysters?

(yeah I know fresh is always going to be better, but as a quick and easy snack, it was quite acceptable flavor wise).

Yeah I like them on crackers, toast, also like sardines the same way. But nobody else in the family does so I don't have them often.

The wife isn't an oyster fan, so any kinda of canned oyster, sardine, etc is a rare thing I seek out on my own. Even though I love a fresh oyster better of course, the canned ones aren't bad.

Love Escargot and Calamari myself if done right.

She usually does most of the shopping, so it's not a common thing in the house.

I like them, but I always check the back of the can to see where they are produced. If it says China, I don't get them.

My coworker offered me a tin of smoked oysters marinated in oil with a chili pepper. It was enjoyable. I started buying them along with the other tinned seafood I purchase: mackeral, sardines and herring.

yeah i was reading up on them and most people say to avoid the chinese brands or anything with cottonseed oil. i may go to trader joe's and check out what they carry before i order a batch online.

I usually have a can or two on the shelf just in case, don't normally eat it by itself however. It is great to go with chowder and the oil make good pasta.

Are these found in the canned seafood ailes at most groceries?

pretty much. right next to tuna fish, sardines, etc. usually small 3 oz tins. it's pretty tasty stuff if you want to take a chance and give them a try one day.

Plus if you go to a place like Walmart, 80% of them are processed there. You almost have to grab the three most exepensive ones there and work your way down to what you are willing to pay for them.

I like fishy things, big fan of sardines (as well clams, scallops) but can't do smoked oysters. Just nasty.

I usually have a few cans of anchovies in the closet for making sauce. If you dump a few cans of anchovies in a pan with oil, garlic, etc they basically turn to complete mush. It gives you a nice base for when you add the tomato sauce/paste/etc. Delicious. I'll have to try the oysters out.... at least as the OP did on some crackers. Trader joe's sounds like a good starting point.

yeah, i think that's why i'm going to start looking at trader joe's. i've read online about people who have found non chinese smoked oyster tins there. the one's i tried initially was from china so i want to try the non-chinese brands and see if there's a difference.

anchovies are so salty. i had it on pizza at a place in NY which is world famous and hated all of the salt. however maybe that salt will be a great benefit to homemade gravy, aka good pasta sauce. i need to try this out asap.

were they from china?
Not sure, I've tried them a few times over the years. I'm not really fond of smoked clams, either, but will eat them (if offered, I don't buy them). I think it's the smoke flavoring used commercially.

The one at Traders Joe's is from South Korea. I bought like 30 cans last time and I'm down to 2 cans. It's smoked and in olive oil and $2.69 a can.

I don't touch the Chinese stuff.

I love them.

Walmart has the Geisha brand smoked oysters and their own house brand for something like $1.56 per tin. The exact same product is usually $3.00+ at the grocery chains.

Geisha Smoked Baby Clams are even better. I notice they disappear from the shelves for a couple months every year, so they could be somewhat seasonal. About the same buck-and-a-half price.

I could just about live off tinned fish and crackers or tortillas. The two layer sardines in oil are also great. Well worth the price vs the giant sardines found in the 99 cent tins.

I have not had them in a while, but they were one of my favourite snacks as a kid. I'll have to grab a can. Just love them on a cracker.

Does TJ only carry one? I'll be stopping in this weekend.
