I didn't know tj had that policy. Nice to know. I think I'll make that 20 minute drive on the weekends and shop there.

I love them.

Walmart has the Geisha brand smoked oysters and their own house brand for something like $1.56 per tin. The exact same product is usually $3.00+ at the grocery chains.

Geisha Smoked Baby Clams are even better. I notice they disappear from the shelves for a couple months every year, so they could be somewhat seasonal. About the same buck-and-a-half price.

I could just about live off tinned fish and crackers or tortillas. The two layer sardines in oil are also great. Well worth the price vs the giant sardines found in the 99 cent tins.

Yeah I think I'm going to throw these sardines in tomato sauce away. It's like 3 big ass pieces of fish in the tin. And when I turn the can over its from in China.

Wtf. Can America produce anything at all these days? Now I have to look at labels now to make sure I'm not buying Chinese garbage.

I sometimes take smoked oysters and dice them, then stir fry them with brown rice, garlic, soy sauce, fish sauce and a little brown sugar, then top with green onions. It's especially good with the oysters that are packed with hot peppers.

One thing I dislike about them is that the size of the packed oysters is somewhat inconsistent, no matter what brand. I like the smaller ones a lot more

My step dad used to buy these all the time. He would eat them on crackers, and act like it was caviar (he grew up during the depression). Every so often I get a can for my mom so we can reminisce.

Strangely enough, the size of actual oysters is somewhat inconsistent even before they are shucked and smoked .

I tried Beluga caviar years ago when I worked at a restaurant and banquet center. Some rich Middle Eastern family booked a wedding reception with the works, had to rent some fine serviceware and utensils, gold trimmed glasses and shit, because our best serviceware was too commoner for the family. There were like 20 IROC Z-28 Camaros in the parking lot that night. Anyway, the chef let me try some caviar (don't remember the brand but it was the "good" stuff imported from Russia or Scandanavian countries). I had the same reaction of Tom Hanks' character in the movie "Big". Would eat smoked oysters before caviar, any day.

I wasn't referring to the taste of caviar, but what it represents. He'd treat himself with a can of smoked oysters and crackers like rich people indulge with caviar.

You do not know your hot sauces, obviously

Or just joking.

No Crystal atm, but still have half a bottle of Texas Pete, among other things.

I think we go through Cholula more than any hot sauce, even over a lot of esoteric things.

The wife and I both love the original.

http://www.cholula.com/

I think half the local small restaurants here have a bottle of Crystal on the table usually, though.

Is very good stuff.

It may not sound like its good if you are on a diet but I used to eat just about all the canned seafood mentioned here straight from the can into w/ a small bowl of freshly cooked rice and i lost a ton of weight.

reason being is that regardless of the high sodium and calorie count, the aftertaste of eating such a meal curbed my appetite. whenever i burped in an enclosed area it boosted the previously stated appetite suppression.

Decided to pick up a can as I seen someone on the Food Network use them in a dish. I had it for lunch and I gotta admit, it was actually really good. Spread a little cream cheese on a cracker and top with an oyster = YUMMMMMM .

Anyone like canned oysters?

(yeah I know fresh is always going to be better, but as a quick and easy snack, it was quite acceptable flavor wise).

Gross.

I need to try them. They sound really good. I started eating sardines a few years back and have run out of the case I bought. I bought a bunch from trader joe's and ended up settling on Cento brand boneless/skinless as my favorite. Mild flavor and goes really good with crackers alone or hot sauce....water or beer or wine... High quality from Morocco vs the stuff from Poland they sell at the dollar store.

I'll have to check some of the oyster brands mentioned here. When you have 5-10 cans on the shelf that all look the same, it's hard to tell if you're getting something worth eating.

Just got back from Trader Joe's - bought 5 cans. I got home and immediately opened one for a snack. Threw them on some crackers with a dash of Sriracha on each. I must say, I will be buying these more often now. Very, very good for a quick snack.
