Booming iPhone sales were the driving force behind Apple’s record revenues in the final quarter of 2014, with its $18bn net profit the largest quarterly profit reported by any company.

Even so, one part of Apple’s business wasn’t so positive: its iPad tablet. Apple sold 21.4m of them in the last three months of 2014 compared to 26m in the last quarter of 2013 – a 17.7% drop.

...

“The upgrade cycle is longer,” said Apple chief executive Tim Cook, in his last earnings call. “It’s longer than an iPhone, probably between an iPhone and a PC. We haven’t been in the business long enough to say that with certainty, but that’s what we think.”

I bought my iPad2 in 2012. When I upgraded my iPhone5 to iPhone6, I'm still using my iPad2. Though money talks, there are also other reasons :hmm:

How is this ixxx brand cannibalisation for you folks?

I was considering an iPad mini, but I bought an HP Stream 7 to augment my iPhone 5c instead, so I don't know. It's mediocre, but not terrible.

Maybe other manufacturers are just finally getting around to making tablets that aren't total crap for less than $300.

I was pretty me going into my Galaxy Tab 3 8" at the $250 price point, but for simply Web browsing and nothing else it suited my needs just fine and though I did find it a bit slow at first I got used to it rather quickly and it's been my daily driver at home, though there are times I would pickup my Note 4 instead when I want higher resolution.

I'm not surprised to see phablets cannibalizing tablets in the 7-8'' range. It becomes a bit redundant to own a second device at that point. I prefer the 10-12'' form factor. Preferably with a 4:3 or 3:2 aspect ratio.

Tim Cook is also right about the longer upgrade cycle. iPads are more expensive than the (subsidized) phones. So people are going to keep them longer.

I like what Microsoft is doing with the Surface Pro 3. It's light enough to be used as a tablet, but it's still a powerful full computer. Meaning it's not just a media consumption device. In a lot of ways, it's superior to the MacBook Air. I'm really curious to see what Apple is cooking up for the rumoured 12'' iPad, because it will have to be something along those lines.

iPads are much less expensive than subsidized phones. The subsidy lures in dumb Americans, but to the tune of ~ $2000 in service cost over the life of the contract. Sure, you'd have to pay for voice service anyway but that can be significantly less than the cost of a smartphone plan (not that anyone rocks a dumb phone these days).

Longer upgrade cycles has something to do with Apple keeping the iPad 2 A5 SoC usable, partly because they used it in the 2012 iPad mini. Also, just like in the PC world, there really aren't any "killer apps" that demand an A7/A8 SoC at this time. I'm rocking an ancient 2006 Mac and I've love to upgrade, but it's not like I can't do my work with what I have. Unless you're a gamer or content creator, the same logic applies to the A5-based iPads at this time.

Since I got my iPhone 6 Plus, I don't use my iPad mini 2nd gen (Retina+A7) quite as much. Now, an iPad Air 2 would make more sense than a mini2/3 since Air 2 has 2GB RAM.

True, but the dummies only look at the up front cost, which is $299 for the iPhone 6 Plus. Besides, your phone plan never seems to go down when your contract ends. Guess I'm still paying off my 4S I bought at launch.

Get rid of iPhone subsidy and you'll see longer upgrade cycle for iPhone too. The new phones and tablets are good enough now for people to hold on for longer than 2 years. Cellular subsidy model just forces/encourages early unnecessary phone upgrades.

Lol, if they did that I wonder how much longer Apple would carry on selling base 16gb phones for $700.

Cool story, bro. I don't want a Nokia flip.
