WIN XP (home) cannot access windows update via IE6, start menu or control panel. When IE attempts to access that website PC hangs...otherwise IE is fine. I have tried system file checker, disabled norton AV, there is no spyware or viruses present. All other applications work flawlessly. When I attempt to open file in control panel I get the following :An exception occurred while trying to run ?shell32.dll,control_rundll c:\windows\system32\wuaucpl,automatic updates.
SP2 has not been installed on this PC and never had a problem with accessing V5..just did custom installs of critical patches.
Please HELP!!!!

Thank you for the speedy reply.

Also, before I posted the problem I goggled around and there were 3 or 4 references to my problem that said to register ..REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll
I did this and still had the problem These are different than the ones you refer to.

The solution you suggested seems to be intended for an intranet or proxy server problem. I run 4 pc's at home thru a router for dsl...3 are fine!!!! I don't want to take a chance crashing this one before I completely back it up.

SiSoft Sandra 2005 reports that XP hasn't the correct service packs. If I put in the sp2 disk that I have...would it perhaps fix the problem. I really don't want XP2 in here but I can always undo some of the changes it makes that I don't like. This pc got the December updates via custom mode so it was woking fine then.

Skip the other steps and just do #5, registering the dlls. You won't mess anything up registering windows dlls. Also, look through the windows update logfile and post any errors you see.

u sure it's not a proxy problem? I've had a similar problem, and it just had to do w/ the proxy the computer was connected to.

u can try this:
tools, internet options, (under general tab) click on Settings button, click on "view objects" button, and delete everything there.

then try again.

Did it...still no success!!

This is so frustrating.

Some viruses (using the term broadly) will take steps to keep your computer from visiting Windows Update and/or security-related sites. You might want to remove the hard drive from the problem computer, put it into a different computer as a second drive, and run an exhaustive antivirus/antispyware scan on it using a current-generation antivirus software that's configured to use all its detection options (heuristics, compressed-file scanning, etc). Give that a try If you need a modern antivirus software to use for that purpose, you can get free trialwares of Norton Antivirus 2005 or McAfee VirusScan 9.0, among others.

PROBLEM SOLVED re: updates...but I don't know why it occurred. Went to control panel---system properties...windows update..."turn off" was checked. I always did them manually via IE tools.
I had been unable to get this window up from any other location..such as when I clicked on update icon in control panel. I checked "automatic" and lo and behold..on came IE and it proceeded to microsoft's V5 address and downloaded the stuff. I had been getting this message "An exception occurred while trying to run ?shell32.dll,control_rundll c:\windows\system32\wuaucpl,automatic updates

I'm really puzzled as to why I could only access thru system properties, Now it works fine even when I go thru IE tools menu and update icon in control panel. After download and install. of WU I again checked "turn off" and everything works as it did before problem arose.

Any ideas...how problem was caused and why it could only be fixed this way??
TIA
