i got home for the summer on minday, and i brought a lynsksys(spelling?) switch home with me. i plugged it in and now my moms computer cannot get on to the network ot internet. the switch is fine because my computer is working great on it. i also had this swich here over christmas and everything was fine to, her computer worked great.
she is running xp pro
i have already tried everything that i can think of. i tried plugging her computer straight into the cable modem like it was before i came home, and that did not work. i unistalled and reinstalled the NIC a few times. i tried it in a different pci slot. i have tried releasing and renewing the IP. but she keeps getting a 169 ip address. i am stumped. i called my brother and neither of us can figure it out. any help is appreciated.

You need to use a router to split a cable connection unless your ISP has given you two authorizations/usernames/whatever which they usually do not.

best way is use a host PC and an extra NIC to share the connection. always a safe bet.
as for your not-getting-an-IP problem, i'm a little stumped. are you getting one?

no she is not getting and ip, my computer works fine. it all used to work but now only my computer will get on the internet. my moms cannot. i was hoping that i would not have to do the internet connection sharing method because my computer is in another room and i do not want to have to run a second cord into here. but it is looking like that is the only option i have right now.

I would by a router with a 5 port switch.. connect the router to the cable modem and the pc's to the switch ports.. once you do this you may half to tell the router to copy the mac address of the pc that is using the internet rite now.. did you call the tech support of your internet provider maybe they didnt config you to have more than one ip and the the ip may be looking for the mac address of you pc and not your moms..

i tried unplugging my computer and plugging hers back just the way is was before i can home. it still does not work. i also tried plugging her computer directly into my second nic port and sharing the connection, but i could not even get the little light to turn on on the nic on either of the computers when they were plugged directly in(i am almost positive i was using a crossover cable, but i am going to double check to make sure). nothing will get her computer back on. i have tried everyting i can think of other than the router/switch idea that viking suggested.

I believe that you need to use a straight-through cable if you're using a 2nd NIC with ICS. Please correct me if I'm wrong...
