Cannot re-establish network

I had a pretty simple network - two machine, one running XP-Pro - the other running XP-Home, connected by a Linksys router.

In that I was having problems with Windows Messenger and the NAT of the router, I picked up a second NIC and tried unsuccessfully, to maintain the network while using the second NIC to go to the Internet (via cable modem). So, I'm trying to go back to where I started. And there lies the problem.

Both machines see the router. I have access to the Internet from both, and the router DHCP server lists both machines. BUT, no matter how many times I run the networking wizard from both machines, I cannot get them to see one another.

Nothing else has changed. Both are still set up for the same work groups. But still - no luck.

Any suggestions on how to get the problem resolved?

Thanks in advance!!!

go to dos and ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or ping "computer name"

Make sure both have NetBEUI installed.... You can do file transfers with TCP/IP, but NetBEUI is...slightly helpful to say the least. Good luck.

Do you have any shared resources between the 2? I have found out in my few days into networking that if nothing is shared then the computers will not show up in the network neighborhood.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

To answser everyone's questions:

- No, the two machines cannot ping each other.

- I'm going with the default network setup which did not include NetBEUI in the first place.

- Yes, in running the Network, both machines were set for the default workgroup (MSHOME). In trying to do the drive mapping process, I notice that the MSHOME workgroup is listed, BUT from the XP-Pro machines, no computers are listed for the workgroup. From the XP-Home, both machines are listed - but none of the drives are listed. And ...

- Yes, the drives on both machines are configured as being able to be shared. These settings were retained from when I originally had the network running.

Thanks to all - keep the suggestions coming.

NetBEUI is NOT a routeable protocol

if the two computers are crossing the router to talk to each other you need to use tcp/ip

you can however use NetBEUI over tcp/ip

i have no clue about those types of routers... do they use ACLs [access controll lists]?
they could have some sort of ACLs so they are not on the same boardcast domain

thus you would get internet to both but not beable to talk to each other

Are you using the same user account with the same password on both machines?

PROBLEM RESOLVED!!!

I went to the device manager on each machine and told it to uninstall the NIC. After re-detecting the NIC, I went to the Network Connections and to my surprise, found both the Internet Gateway AND LAN - both working.

I still have no idea as to the nature of the problem, but I AM impressed with the ability of XP to "heal" itself. I just wish this solution were documented somewhere. It would have saved me a LOT of trouble.

Thanks to all for their suggestions.

Hmmm. Same thing happened to me over the weekend. The LAN went bust, and I had to uninstall/reinstall to get things working again. This, using Win2kPro. Very odd.
