Cannot renew DHCP address

Computer has Windows XP has 2 NICs in it. When I plug the computer into the router using either NIC it won't get an IP from the DHCP server. I checked and DHCP service is started in windows, what else would cause this? Possibly a firewall that is corrupted? This computer isn't mine. It has AOL and the firewall that comes with AOL.

If you have a BartPE CD, You can boot off that and see if it gets an IP from the router, thatll rule out AOL or software related problems.

Is there an IP in the router which is tied to a specific computer name? I have 2 NICs in mine. I had this issue because I initially reserved an IP for my computer when I was hooked up to a different NIC. But, I believe it was because the NICs have different MAC addresses.

Also check to make sure the router's IP range is not narrowed down.

I'd say chances are the router lost track of what ip addresses are in use in the network and is trying to give you an address that's already in use. Common causes are additional things on the network like printers - or the router was reset but not all computers were reset.

Sorry if this is a little basic,

Is TCP/IP installed properly.
Is each card configured for DHCP.
If you use manual settings can you ping the device with the DHCP server
Is DHCP turned on server side?
Does DHCP have all required ip ranges, static exclusions, etc configured
Have you rebooted the device with DHCP in case server has hung
Is DHCP configured correctly to send ip config info to your card
What does ipconfig /all from cmd reveal assuming xp
what does ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /new reveal
Different known working cable?

Its been a long time since I did the training courses but I vaguely rememeber DHCP uses network broadcasts during the renew process. Does your firewall setup block broadcast traffic?

If you only have a few PCs its probably better to use a manual IP schema anyway as devices like routers, print server will need to be non-DHCP anyway
