Cannot see computer on home network.
I have a desktop running win 10 and a laptop running win 7.
Using Norton 360 on both machines. (freebie from /Comcast)
My home network has run well for years. Starting when the desktop was updated from win 7 to win 10 I would have minor problems when win 10 had a monthly update and I was able to fix those problems.
The problem I have now is when I look at my network using my laptop I can see the desktop only as a media device. This problem started with the win 10 anniversary update and monthly security update.
I checked the desktop and the drives, etc are set to be seen by others on the network
I’ve tried a few suggestions found on the Microsoft site and others and nothing restores being able to see the drives other then media drives.
Any idea what is rong and how to fix the problem?

Freebie means No money but not necessarily means Good.

As a first step I would get rid of Norton. Current Win 10 Native Firewall and Win Defender are as good as any of the 3rd party.

In addition no matter what Win 10 has its """Telemetry""" so their is No reason to add a 3rd party """Telemetry""" too.

Then recheck the status of the the relevant settings in each problematic computer.

At - Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

Set correctly and reboot.

HI
Deleted Norton on the desktop. I used the remove software feature in windows and then downloaded from Norton a removal tool that is supposed to remove all traces of all Norton products. Rebooted the desktop and after the reboot, using the laptop I was able to see the drives on the desktop.
I followed Jackmds suggestion about checking settings and reboot.
Then,,,,, shut down both pc's. Later on,, started both pc's .
Using the laptop to look for a file on the desktop,,, nothing worked. Using laptop I can see the media part of the desktop.
Checking the setting on the desktop they are set to be able to see files, etc on the desktop using the laptop to look.
Another strange thing is while looking at the desktop before I needed to log into the network to see the drives and files. Now the login in doesn't work but,,, I can see the G and H drives and access the files,,, and can see the C drive but cannot access the files.
All drives are set to share files, etc.
Tired and confused,,, I shut things down for the night.
Turned pc's on today,, same problems.
On desktop Win Defender is updated and firewall is on On laptop,, Norton is on.
At this point in time I am lost and confused. Being both machines are 8 plus years old and networking was installed 8 years ago is to just leave the home-group,, delete any home group and network settings on both machines and start over again.
Any thoughts?

If it was working after removing Norton, why mess with the advanced network sharing settings at all?

That said, that's probably what the issue is.

I'm having an issue with one of my several NAS units; after upgrading the firmware on several of them, the oldest one doesn't show up by name anymore in Network in Explorer. I have to manually type in the IP address in the bar.

Hi
I didn't change anything. Just checked the settings after removing norton and rebooting to finish norton removal.
After reboot, I could see all drives on network.
Shut everything down
A few hours later, turned on pc's
Network problem is back. Plus add other weird problems mentioned in my second post.
To repeat,,, Settings looked good ( unless I missed something) I never made any changes to anything after norton removal.
