cannot watch DVD's with Vista Business

I just did a clean install of Windows Vista Business. When I put in any DVD and try to play it I get this message.

Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.

My system is

Dell XPS 3.4 GHz
1 GB of memory
256 MB NVidia video card.

I have my display set to 1024X768 (32bit)

I installed the latest Nero and can watch them with Nero Showtime but I prefer to use Windows Media Player. Any ideas?

I don't really want to pay for another program to get this to work. They played fine with Windows XP and Media Player 10. Maybe it is this version of Media Player that is the problem and it pisses me off.

I downloaded and installed the codec package you suggested and it didn't work, I still get the same error message. Thanks for the help though, it really was appreciated. I don't know why it doesn't work. I've tried both store bought DVD's and home made DVD's.

If you played a DVD on XP, then you got an MPEG2 decoder from somewhere. Maybe from some DVD player that came with a DVD writer? Neither XP nor MCE 2005 came with an MPEG decoder and wouldn't play DVDs without one.

Vista Business Edition MAY not have an MPEG decoder included. I'm not sure. But if Nero Showtime is working, then you are likely using Nero-supplied codec.

Did you try doing what the error message said, and lowering your display resolution to the lowest possible value?

Like Monger said, XP did not come with a decoder built-in. You need WinDVD, PowerDVD or some other program to give you a decoder. Also you should update your video card drivers to the newest nvidia's if you haven't already.

With a clean install of Windows XP, WMP would get it's codec after I installed Nero. Nero would give it the codec. So now that I have Vista Business I started with a formatted hard drive and installed Vista, then the newest version of Nero, but this time it didn't work.

So I don't know where the problem is. It may be WMP 11, the new Version of Nero, or maybe it is a something as simple as a setting somewhere inside of Vista. Or maybe it's a driver issue. I'm just stumped.

Yes I did try to lower the display resolution to it's lowest setting and still got the exact same message.

I've seen this exact message before...with XP. It was with an HP desktop PC. I recall downloading HP's DVD player (WinDVD as I recall), which apparently included a codec.

From Microsoft:

DVD Playback Options for Windows
If you are running Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Business, or Windows XP, you must install a compatible MPEG-2 decoder (also known as a DVD decoder) before continuing with the following activities.
Playing a DVD
Playing a recorded TV show
Playing video files that were encoded with the MPEG-2 codec (.mpeg, .mpg, and some .avi files)

For Windows Vista
DVD playback capabilities are available in Home Premium and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista and will be available for purchase for other editions when the final version of Windows Vista is available.

if the latest nero says that it supports vista, see if the documentation says anything about the decoder, or dealing with WMP, idk how their website is with patches, etc. or a knowledge base on the product your using, but i would search through those, lastly resorting to contacting their tech support. if nero says it provides the decoder for vista business, i'd contact them to figure out why it didnt work. seems like compatiblity still to me. you could buy a decoder. but you paid for nero, and if they claim gives a decoder, then go to them.

I had a similiar problem with the Beta of Vista and posted it on the Microsoft Partner website forum. It was a widespread problem and no one had a solution.
I just did a test install of released Vista Business upgrade. I already had PowerDVD installed and it picked up the codec fine and will play dvd's. It is version 4.00.2417.
