I currently have a Canon T1i and I want to upgrade to the new Mark III this year when it comes out.

It has not yet been announced but according to rumors it's almost certainly coming out this year. Rumor had it that Ron Howard was seen with it during some sort of private party sponsored by Canon.

Hardly no details have been released yet regarding the specs, but given the recently price drops on the Mark II, it's probably going to be announced soon.

From what I understand, the 5D is great for shooting videos. If you're looking to take pictures, the 7D is the way to go. Either way, both are excellent cameras.

Except the 5D has a full frame sensor and the 7D doesn't. The vast majority of high end professional portrait photographers I know used the 5D, the others use a 1Ds.

The devalued 5D Mk II will be worth looking at. The current generation of cameras from both Canon and Nikon are very good. D4s and D800s will only make the D3s and D700s great deals once the price settles to its low-point. Paying for new tech is something I'll leave to the rich, unless there is just some particular need I have. The lack of video on the D700 and its low MP count will not bother me at all.

Check out Dawn Shields http://www.dawnshields.com/. Most of what you'll see was shot on the original 5D. She only upgraded to the Mk II a few months ago. I guarantee she will continue shooting great shots with the Mk II for years. Pretty good "pictures".

BTW, she has a 7D she uses as a backup, a camera to hand to her assistant, or for occassional video use.

As I look at it the t2i is still a really good camera. So...if you can hold out for the mark iii then thats exactly what i would recommend. the mark ii is a fine camera but I do think that this year we will see the 5d3

I don't disagree, but I've always viewed the 5D as a great camera if you're planning on doing lots of videos. If you want pictures, you usually go with a 7D or if you have the money, a 1D. It's just my oppinion though.

To the OP, you should also realize that by moving to a full frame camera like the 5D, you will need to pay a bit closer attention to the lenses that you purchase because some lenses don't play well with a cropped and full frame sensor.

As a professional photographer, I greatly prefer the 5DmkII to the 7D for weddings. If I needed more speed,I would get a 1d-series. Not a fan of 1.6x crop.

7D is for speed on the cheap and reach. if you're interested in sheer IQ (weddings, portraits, low light, etc), the 5D II is a better camera than the 7D.

The 5D is full frame. The 7D is crop. They're not really comparable. The 7D is great for sports and action while the 5D is great for stuff like architecture, landscape, portrait, and just about anything that doesn't need the extra reach and speed of the 7D. You also get reduced depth of field which you might find useful.

The 5D Mark II is going to be the much much better value, but I have a feeling Canon is going to make the Mark III a game changer. This is their true flagship.

Could you possibly elaborate on this point? What would be an example of a lens that is not going to work well on a full frame sensor?

I'm quite interested about this because I'm currently using an old crop frame (the 350d) but will be getting a full frame at some stage.

At the moment I only have 2 lenses, an 18-55mm (the kit lens) and a 16-35mm f/2.8L II but will likely get more lenses in the future so would love to know what the issues you're referring to are and which lenses might not play well with a full frame.

Cheers,

Cat

I would get only Canon L lenses for it. Probably just start off with the L zoom lens that usually comes with the Mark II.

I would wager it will have DIGIC5, perhaps even a pair of them

Full Frame.

I would expect it to be a lower MP camera perhaps 16 or 18 MP.

Swivel screen.

SDXC support, maybe XQD. I think the current generation will be the one of the last for CF.

Incorporate features from Magic Lantern into the stock firmware.

Possibly reworked sensor with lower noise, faster data dump.

HDMI out, possibly USB 3.0.

Possibly Touch Screen.

Remote Smart Phone Control, Live View?

Unfortunately, possibly some sort of 3D gimmick tie in.

I would say, 18 stops of dynamic range, 36mp sensor, 4k video, (120fps on 2k) swivel LCD, impossible low light abilities, follow focus incorporated, pro-level AF 43 AF points, complete under-water abilities right out of the box!

I would delight in auto focus video, and high FPS cropped video, it would be cool if it could be custom resolution cropping, but even something like 120x80 would net you 6000 fps. Or if you could choose a fps and it would crop automatically to an appropriate aspect ratio. That could be really useful for SCIENCE!

I would appreciate way cheaper underwater enclosures and cheaper astral mounts too.

I'd love to buy only L series lenses but cost is also a factor.

If I wanted to get a 50mm prime lens, the f1.2 L series looks pretty sweet. But it costs about 15x more than the f1.8 lens and there's a 50mm f1.4 sitting in the middle price-wise.

Is the canon 50mm f1.4 going to work with the 5D Mark II or is it strictly necessary to use only L lenses? Might need to rethink the full-frame option if they only work with L.

Cheers

Thank you, Random! I've always wondered how a DX would behave on FX, and you illustrated that with a single snap!

Oh gee! Thanks Random that's pretty interesting!

I presume then that you'd get a similar effect with certain canon lenses on a full-frame, is that right? Wondering if there's a compatability list of lenses for the 5D. I'll see what google can find.

Sure enough, Canon website says 'The EOS 5D Mark II is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup' so guess I've answered my own questions on this.

the lenses canon makes exclusively for crop cameras are in the EF-S lineup, so, no, you can't do that with a 5D. the lenses won't even mount on a 5D. if you get a tamron or sigma lens that's intended for a crop camera, it'll mount on a 5D and give you that tunnel.

The 24-105 is a bit of a disappointing lens IMO. Image quality is nothing crazy, AF speed is average, and it's not weather-sealed.

Also, there is no reason to only buy Canon L lenses for it. I have two Canon L's, one manual focus Taiwanese lens, and one Tamron. All four of them are fantastic, and the MF lens sees the most time on the body.
