Why not get a 7D? The money would be worthwhile spent to go from a entry level to a flagship crop body rather than a midrange which might seem like a mediocre upgrade.

Unfortunately, the 7D body will exceed your $700 budget unless you find a good used one. The stepper motor lens will fit, however.

yea, then go for a 60D and a 50 1.8 STM. But realize that anything 3200 ISO and above is pretty grainy in the 60D.

But if you can expand your budget, a 6D will be worlds better than a 60D (I have both). You can probably get an used 6D for close to 1K

Are used camera body's ok? Some have 60k shutter uses, what range should I consider?

If it comes from a reliable source such as B&H, I would not be apprehensive. Be sure to check their used inventory.

7D is really dated by today standards, 70D would be an better option.

Hopefully soon, Canon will make a new camera that can even remotely match the competition with sensor performance.

doubt it. because by the time Canon catches up to current competition, the competition (Sony) will have leapfrogged even further.

I was hoping to get a Sony A7RII and use a metabones adapter to use my canon mount glass (Canon 135 f/2, Sigma 50 f/1.4 Art, Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, Canon 85 f/1.2, Tamron 24-70 f/2.8) but upon more research, I learned that the AF isn't all that great with an adapter and the cool stuff like eye AF doesn't work with non Sony glass. So couldn't justify the 3K price.

The 60D feels much more like a real camera, compared to the XSi:
- Much more - and way better! - control over every aspect of your photo.
- Much better ISO capability.
- A vari-angle screen, which allows you to take pictures you couldn't even try with a fixed-screen/optical viewfinder combo.
- Weatherproof.

If you can find it cheap (I snagged one last year, during a clearance sale), the 60D is a real camera. I upgraded from a T3i, and there's no discussion as to which is the better product.

I still want to sell my Canon DSLR and go for A7RII, A7RII makes every Canon camera look pathetic.

don't really care what others say. I have the 60D. I took it out in the rain for a shoot one day few years ago. It got fairly wet, but not soaked (I kept drying it off on regular intervals). Few days later, it started shutting off randomly. My repair under warranty was denied because upon inspection, they saw water damage and I ended up having to pay to have it repaired. When I picked it up post repair, I was told by the tech that water got in one of the components on the top and that they had to replace the pcb under the top lcd panel. So yea, the 60D is not weatherproof because a weather proofed camera should not have malfunctioned after one outing in the rain.

A Canon 5D Mark III is probably "weatherproof" but I couldn't bring myself to take a $3k camera out into rain or very dusty conditions. I'm really cynical...

sometimes you don't have a choice. I recently shot a wedding with a 5Dmk3 and it was torrential downpour that day. Camera got soaked, but worked perfectly.

When I took my 5D MKII to the Amazon, it rained a lot. I did have a Pelican raincoat, but it was a PITA to use. I used the following "field expedient" and it worked! A one gallon, clear plastic Zip-Lock bag. All that stuck out was the lens and it served the purpose.

I now always have a couple in my bag. Will work OK on D60 too.

Really it comes down to what you shoot. For me the 7d is just a more expensive 60d. In fact for me the 7d didnt offer anything over my previous 50d. For me low light iso is what counts and for the price the 6d was the best choice for my upgrade. My keeper rate is also a lot better than what it was with the 50d.

My advice is to buy a used 6d. Full frame takes better overall pictures than crop and they hold there value better.
You already have a 450d (xsi) and I dont think outside of frames per second and ergonomics the 60d is going to offer you a whole lot more than what you already have. It will give you a boost in iso performance though. But again for me I would just hold out to get the 6d. Its like your wanting to your computer to make it snappier and your looking at buying a new cpu while you would be better buying a ssd

Also what lenses do you have? You might do well upgrading lenses. If all you have is the 50 stm then consider another prime like a 3rd party macro lens.
Or pick up a yongnuo flash for cheap and keep your iso levels low. At iso 100 most every camera is going to produce the same iq.

Save your money and keep your eyes out for a good full frame 6d.

Now I know it may sound like im rambling but (even though the a7rII looks awesome and I would love to switch over to sony) the 6d really gives me great pictures every time and takes away any reason for needing to upgrade . The 50d which is very similar to the 60d,7d etc always made me want to upgrade.

$700 will get you into a 70d if you are patient for a deal.

70d has two key things the 60d does not:
Microfocus adjust. without this some high aperture lenses may not focus correctly when used through the viewfinder.
much improved focus when using liveview. You can easily "rack" or change focus when making video, which looks quite cool and professional.

Either will accept the 50mm STM.

I picked up my 70D used for well south of $700. Keep an eye on the Canon-specific forums for a good deal and you are set. There are always people jumping to full frame that are looking to unload their gently used crop sensor gear.

I upgraded from a 30D and the difference between the two bodies is quite significant, especially in terms of ISO performance. I imagine the jump from a XSi will be a similar leap in performance.

Its fairly pointless to move from one crop sensor to another. Either step up to a 6D or, better choice, spend that $700 on a much better lens then you have now. A new lens would provide you with a quality jump greater than moving up to a 60D or 70D

I disagree. While I would say it is pointless to continually upgrade every year, making a large upgrade (say a 20D/30D to a 70D) can be quite beneficial. My 30D struggled at anything over ISO 800, and even that was pushing things. With my 70D, I was able to get usable photos at an evening swim meet this year at ISO 6400. That is a huge difference is usability and makes the upgrade well worth it. As always, usage needs will determine whether an upgrade is justified or not. It isn't simply about image quality, sometimes it is about getting an image to start with.
