~Would it work for Canon to use a marginally larger sensor? So ~410mm^2. Keeping a constant aspect ratio that is like 16.5x24.8. If that is the case I'm guessing they assuming that they can maintain 50D performance by slightly increasing the sensor size (Which is a 1.6X as opposed to others which are 1.5X) and then pumping it full of steroids
Perhaps...we'll see very soon.

Sounds promising. Interesting that Canon is finally competing Nikon head to head. Considering Canon's previous history, it is such a big shift in their line-ups.
I really hope Canon also pulls out FF one like this and I think it's only a matter of time. Gotta thank Nikon...

I was just being curious., but if you're just going to go on and on about pixel peeping, then never mind.

from pixel peeper central:

7) New imaging sensor electronics and design improve signal to noise ratio. Base ISO from 100 to 6400. Top ISO is now 'only' 12800 (NOT 25600).

8) LCD is new Polymer Network LCD that will supposedly still work fine under sunlight illumination.

Canon 15-85mm IS (September 2009) - Nikon 16-85mm VR (March 2008)

you know, because canon didn't have a 17-85 or anything.

I thought I did a decent job at explaining my position rather than just blaming it on pixel peeping. Again, yes go ahead and compare 100% samples RAW with no NR if you really want to see which camera is better at high ISO noise. However, I find for me the real test is to look at a picture taken at that ISO and decide whether or not I think the result is "acceptable". In the case of the 50D I find ISO 3200 acceptable. Others are more "noise conscious" and decide for them that 1600 is as high as they'll take it. That's fine as well.

But I'm curious how the new 15-85 IS will do... What's the point of this? Are they going to add constant F2.8 across? Because the 17-85 is a pretty good buy. It's not the sharpest lens out there, and I'd take the 17-55 over it in terms of IQ.... Shrug.

if they improve the worst ever barrel distortion and CA of the 17-85 i think people will be happy. improve the resolution too and they'll have a winner.

at 18MP... let's do 200% peeping.. LOL.

The press (out of Canon China) pretty much leaked everywhere.. and the marketing of 7 "double", 7D

so on the ground level, look like a better CMOS and signal convention system (will it be the patent that they file on Jan 2009 about a separate light frequency layer capture?)
a new AF system (either borrow from current 1d's or an cut down of coming 1dmk4) and metering system.
Even 24P video... that missing in 5Dmk2 (will there be a firmware update for 5dmk2?)
slave flash master control, much more onboard picture style

So I will say good on paper, and cp to D300s. Let's see the price tag and some picture quality etc.

wow 1x 100%....and to think I was impressed by .92 and .94 100% of Pentax K-7 / Nikon D300

so what was all that talk about APS being dead and the future belonging to APS? Doesn't seem like Canon is quite convinced that APS isn't worhwhile if its putting out a what appears to be a 1D camera for APS-C.

holy shit, 100% 1.0x?! That would be awesome. Though, I'm still wondering on the pricetag... everything sounds good and all, but it's still a crop camera. And it's gotta compete against the D300s. But this camera does sound like I'll get an 11-16 after all and it won't go to waste =)

Looks like a great camera. Finally added the built-in wireless flash commander (that Nikon has had in their cameras for about 5 years now), and they added an LCD in the optical viewfinder (another Nikon feature) to dynamically display the AF points and composition grid. The new 100% VF matches what the D300 has. Build quality has also been beefed up.

Imagine if some of these features (new metering system, new AF system, better build quality, etc.) made it into the 5D2. Now that would have been a camera to reckon with. Gizmodo commented that it has reasonable high ISO performance that starts to falter around ISO 3200.

I commend them for improving ISO a bit from the 50D while raising resolution...impressive. I'd say from looking at imaging resource ISO performance is a hair above 50D levels. Nothing major...but still...not bad.

edit: I see that we get the usual £:$ pricing - £1699 here, $1699 US - allowing for the prices shown incl. VAT/excl. sales tax that's about a 45% difference in price...

What's the deal with that?
