daveyboy74 - Those are the major reasons why I went with the Canon A40 vs S200. I think the size is perfect, optical zoom is great and best of all it uses regular AA's because I have 20 Panasonic 1600 mAH rechargeable batteries.

Case from Gateway just arrived, ordered on Sunday. This is a must have. Great looking case with a powershot logo on the flap. Holds 4 extra batteries and space for xtra flash cards. Carrying strap and a belt loop to boot! Well constructed.

i've decided, as well, that the a40 is the one for me. i have a rain check for my local officemax, since all the officemaxes in my area are sold out

I find the a40 built-in grip to be much more comfortable to hold. The controls and camera is much easier to manage and fits my hand better than the s200. I ended up PMing the OM ad at my local office depot. they had a 10% sign on digital cameras stuck on the wall behind the cameras. The manager said it was over, but gave it to me anyways. So i ended up paying $180. I forgot about the $30 staples coupon, doh. I'll try to go back and see if they'll take it.

Rossman -

You seem to know more about these cameras than anyone I know, so I'm directing this question at you (but anyone who knows definitively, feel free to respond): what is the maximum size compact flash card this camera can take? I use a 128 MB card, and I thought that was as big as it could take, but I've heard people say it can take 256 or even 512. Is that true? Is there a firmware upgrade that allows this, or can I just snap a larger CF card in there? Thanks.

I know it will take at least 256MB but I'm not sure about 512MB.

I'll find out and let you guys know.

I used a 512 viking CF card in my A40 on my vacation in the Caymans this year. It's also come in handy for transfering pictures from my mom's pc to mine.

I don't think CF compatable cameras need firmware updates to handle more memory as the memory controller is located in the CF itself. I think I read something like that, it was an article why CF was better than smartmedia for most applications.

well, since a 512 card is no more per meg than a 256 card, which brand is better (does it even matter?): Memorex, kingmax, or kingston? those are all around $120 from newegg. are there any advantages to getting the smaller card? i.e., speed, reliability etc.?

I can confirm that 512 does work in A40. I bought one and used it. Haven't yet used more than 100 MB on the card though... IMHO it is very convenient to have a 512MB (or maybe a couple of them )

RossMan ?????? I can't believe that you never bought this case till now ! You've been all over ( ) the A40 threads, and this case has been mentioned so many times before ! Anyway, given how much you contribute to the A40 threads.... you are being forgiven.

thats after rebate, though - after tax, it will be the same price as the kingston, and the kingston card is faster. if it was that price without rebate, i might consider it, just to get it now, but i can wait .

My local OM really sucks. I already posted about how they wouldn't take competitor's coupons. So I decided to wait it out and get the s200 sub once the A40s were out of stock. Well the A40s went out of stock and my OM claimed there were no substitutions. They told me I should buy the A40 display model (yeah right).
