Canon CanoScan LIDE 100

My wife needs a scanner for sometime use. I found the above at Fry's for a very low price and was wondering if anyone is familiar with it.

Most scanners are about the same. If there are no specific requierments then any should do.

I use the Canon CanoScan LIDE 90 and found it to be a decent scanner although it did have a problem using a extenstion usb cable I guessing it was too long to work properly.

I have no complaints with my Lide model 70.

You might check Amazon and Newegg for customer reviews, especially the negative ones. Just read carefully to see why they didn't like it -- "arrived a day late" or "UPS crushed it down to the size of a stapler" are not good reasons to pass it up

LIDE100 is a CIS type scanner, consider if you want that type or CCD. CIS in general have shorter warmup time, cost less, use less power when awake, but poor focal depth and contrast. Equivalent Canon CCD would be 4400F. I'd prefer a CIS only for quick-scanning B&W text documents. On another note, some people say Canon has terrible scanner drivers that make the scanner disappear intermittently (I'm one of them), but others have no problems.

I'll bump this thread as I am looking for a simple scanner at present and also came across LIDE100.

@mindless1 - thanks for great CIS versus CCD explanation.

I need the scanner to occasionally scan B&W documents, mainly, so I guess I am OK with CIS type.

One thing that worries me is the PC Mag review which says:
"The LiDE's lack of office-centric features and software makes it the wrong choice for most home offices, and the lack of a film scan feature makes it an even worse choice for anyone interested in scanning film."

But then they say there is some basic OCR functionality.
As its price is very good (Euro 60 or so) I wonder if I could ignore this frienfly warning from PC Mag.

A noobquestion to anyone using this or similar scanner -

Can you scan multiple pages into one PDF document? (I know this model comes with no ADF - that's fine, I am OK to scan each page manually)

Yes with images. I don't know if you can do it with OCR results.

(At least with Canon's bundled software for my model 70, I doubt they'd have taken out the feature.)
