I'm thinking about getting Digital Rebel XTi since they are so affordable. I'm interested in the impressions of others who have bought this camera. Is it a good camera? A good value? Is the kit lens decent or is it trash? etc...

Sorry, I didn't notice there was a camera section. Thanks for the responses.

The kit lens is fine for learning purposes. However, if you're pretty knowledgable about photography and have experience with SLRs/DSLRs, I'd skip the kit lens.

I've had this camera for a year now, and the ONLY qualm I have is that there's too much noise in ISO 400 and above. Overexposing a tad can help diminish this problem, though.

I'd say it's a great buy, especially now that the price is so low.

Oh, and wrong forum.

I've had a regular Digital Rebel for about 3 years, maybe longer though, I can't remember. It's great. Never had one problem with it. I love the thing.

I bought my Rebel XTi 2 weeks ago, and have nothing but good things to say about it. Got me addicted to photography... and I hated taking pictures. If I had to do it again though, I'd buy it without the kit lens, save up, and buy better glass.

it was a good purchase at $900 and an even better purchase at $599 (or less).

never used the kit lens, so dunno about that.

I was recently in the market for a dSLR. I was deciding between the XTi, D40(x), and A100. I wound up getting a D40 w/ kit lens + 70-200 VR lens + bag + strap for $570. My only complaint is the lack of AF compatibility with the non AF-S lenses. All 3 cameras are great, but I'd still buy the D40 again.

I have an XTi since May and absolutely love it. I've taken probably 8k pictures since and get some really awesome results!

I've had an XT since May and I love it. I would definitely get it again if I was in the looking in the entry dSLR market.

That's just the thing - I'm not sure I'll be satisfied with entry level stuff. I've decided to but 6 different cameras today and kept changing my mind - in my other thread I said I'd decided to get the 40D. Then I started looking at Nikons. Tonight I'm again considering the XTi with a really good lens, but I haven't identified that lens yet.

Thats more or less the decision path I took during the early part of this year! I really liked the 30d, but it was nearly 2x more than the XTi and there were rumors of the 40d as well. If money wasn't an issue I would get the 40D. I was able to get more accessories by going with the XTi, and with a birthday and Christmas since, I have gotten other accessories (430EX, monopod, CPL).

If you get the XTi I would strongly recommend the battery grip with the SterlingTek batteries; it balances the camera out nicely with longer lenses and makes the camera fell fuller (although mine weighs ~2.5 lbs with the Tamron 17-50).

get the XTi. Save the money, put it in glass. I like canon mainly for the vast easily obtainable used market. With that said, a K10D or D80 is worth looking at too.. IS on the K10D and nice old school MF lens selection, and both have excellent viewfinders. I'm a little disappointed every time I look through my K1000, and then switch to the 20D.. haha

Anyway, my point in buying a cheaper body is lenses are the better investment, you can upgrade the body anytime, and there's always a market for used stuff to recoup something. The better question is what do you shoot, and which system seems more geared to that style shooting.

Don't know? then get the entry/entry-ish cameras, with a couple of good lenses, and see where it takes you.

Don't get the kit lens. It will ruin your beginning experience with the camera.

going from any 35mm film camera to any crop body will disappoint.
