Don't know what?

Sure everybody, wait until the really, really, really, really, really good digital SLR's come out. Your kids should be grown and out of the house by then. For me, I'll make do with my Digital Rebel, 4GB microdrive, and $80 50mm F1.8 lens to take some dang nice action pics (with no annoying flash) of my kids playing basketball in horridly lit gymnasiums.

To each their own......

By the way, if you read through the forums you linked you will find some pretty awesome shots taken with the Digital Rebel and lot's of satisfied customers. As with any product there are also negative comments. It's also got lots of information on lenses and flashes for the Rebel - use the search function in the "Canon EOS Digital SLR" forum.

I think you need to chill a little...I believe the comment was meant to be "if you have to ask why an SLR is better, you better not buy an SLR'"...not specifically "don't buy a digital Rebel".

If anyone is going to try this.... Good Luck!
You've got more balls than I or just too much money.

I, too, wish this was legit. I have a G2 that I can sell and grab this for little or nothing.

Sigh,

DSLR's are basically higher-performance digital cameras in virtually every aspect. Speed of shooting, photo quality, lens options, customizability, clarity, you name it. I disagree with "if you don't know, then don't buy one." Now is a GREAT time to learn about all the advantages a DSLR gives you. Also check out
Digital Photography Review for TONS of information on all the high-end cameras out and coming out. The Rebel is a great camera to introduce yourself to the DSLR world and one that you will appreciate and use for a long time.

How is that F1.8 Lens? That's the 50mm F1.8 II right? I am looking to get that lens in a month or two and want to know if it really is as good as it seems. $80 for F1.8 fixed is ridiculously cheap!

Thanks hallf. That's what i was saying. My best friend has a Digital Rebel and it is an amazing camera. I'm waiting a little longer before i decide what to get (probably another year). I have a Canon G3 currently and am very happy with it so far.

Customer service had no problem giving me the discount though...so it's worth a shot next time Best Buy has another one of their coupon sales.

The coupon states no DSLR's now? I got the kit back in November at BB with a 10% coupon ($899 AC) and bought their Product Replacement Plan for $100, which IMO is worth every penny. The coupon I used then (preferred customer thing) didn't mention anything about DSLR restrictions. Of course I haven't gotten any Preferred Customer weekend coupons since then (nor the $50 in Reward Zone certificates I should be receiving from the purchase) so who knows.

Yes, the last 10% coupon I received did specifically state not good on DSLR's...but I decided to give it a shot anyways. The cashier at Customer Service put it through with no questions whatsoever. I don't think they really care and there was nothing in their system that "red flagged" it.

Yup, that's the lens. I am happy with it, I did get some really nice shots at my son's basketball games this year. I may invest in a nice F2.8 zoom lens for next year. I already have a decent F3.8 28-200 which will be fine for baseball and soccer season.

pyonir - Sorry for misreading you post dude.

I just wish that there was a smaller focal length fixed lense with that kind of f-rating for that kind of price. The 1.6x multiplier with the 50mm fixed focal gets me a little closer than I prefer for indoor close-quarters shooting, but there doesn't seem to be an alternative.

Man I was so happy when I see it for $600, because I don't really need the lense since I had a canon already. Dam!!!

The Canon Digital Rebel and the new Nikon D70 look very interesting. They are a little larger than what I am looking for and I don't need a removable lens (if the permanently attached lens has at least a 5 to 1 zoom ratio and is high enough in quality.

The recent 8 megapixel cameras from Sony, Nikon and Canon would suit me EXCEPT that they are all noisy (small 8 megapixel sensors are noisy) and have excess chromatic aberations. It seems to me that in the specification wars for 8 megapixel cameras that basic image quality is not as high as it should be.

The Digital Rebel, while having "only" 6 megapixels, has a much larger (and quieter) image sensor. I would like to see a fixed lense (non removable) camera using this sensor and having a high quality lense. I would happily give up some bells, whistles and borderline useful "features" for a camera that gets the basics right!

I don't think that'll happen. The problem you have is that if you step down in size from the DSLR's you are into the "point-and-shoot" and "prosumer" size, and those types of cameras simply can't house a sensor that large. That's where the noise comes in.

Have you checked out the Panasonic Lumix? I think it has only a 4MP sensor, but for the sensor size it should produce good images. And it has a 12x Optical Leica (good quality) fixed zoom lens. That might be up your alley.

To me anyone who needs to consider if 6MP is enough or not, shouldn't be looking at a camera in this class. They would be looking in the $3k+ range of DSLRs. I think that without the interchangable lenses much of the value of an SLR camera is lost. Most cameras for less than $1000 probably don't have a very good lens, and ultimately its lenses that really matter, camera bodies get upgrated every few years, a good lens should last you a lifetime.

That said, my friend who does semi-pro photjournalist work uses one of the Fuji DSLR modles without interchangable lenses. The built in lens has a resonable aperture and zoom range. He is very happy with it for a range of portrature to indoor and external coverage of festivals events and such.

Stores like this are notorious for the bait and stuff routine where they get you interested with a stupidly low price and then force you to buy tons of accessories, including stuff that should come with the camera.

camera stores from NY/NJ are trouble, as *most* of them are scams.

...."You don't want our $200 128mb CF card??? Sorry, the camera is out of stock...."

It's probably Grey Market. In other countries, products are sold for much less than here. There are a few reasons for this. One, you get only the camera and not ANYTHING else. No battery, no cables, and no warranty. Second, refurbishment. at lot of these products are just returns that appear to be in working condition.

Go through the forums at DPReview.com and you will see what I am talking about. In addition, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

What brand/retailer is the f1.8 lens? Sounds too good to be true to me.

I ordered this camera body from Express Cameras back in december... they try to push grossly overpriced accessories on you, and then sell you the "manufacturer's warranty" for $300 or so that the site claims ALL products they sell already have. This means they are passing off grey market items for USA ones (they admit to this on the phone after serious pressing... if they don't hang up on your first). This "body only" kit is not a normal body-only kit as released by Canon. If they ever DO ship anything (I've never heard legit stories of actual shipment)... it will be a body only with absolutely NOTHING. No battery, no charger, no strap, no documentation, nada.

They claim on the phone that they have the item in stock and ready to ship. Once you refuse accessories over and over, they say ok, but the body is backordered, you should get it in 2-3 weeks. After that time is up you call and they claim it is still backordered... another 2-3 weeks.

6 weeks later I cancelled my order after reading the reseller reviews ratings. 2 days after cancellation, someone went on a spending spree with my CC, ordering $1000 worth of iPacs from HPshopping.com, changed my online CC account login, address, phone number, etc with MBNA (my CC provider)... since I caught it the next day and stopped the order before HP shipped or billed anything, the police would not let me file a report claiming "i was not out any money".

Bottom line? Major scam company. Avoid at all costs.

Peace~

Also, after researching for a replacement place to order from, I found that virtually ALL retailers that claim to sell "bodies only" are part of the same fraud company/ring. Some even have the same phone number and address.

Things to look out for in the sites:

- They almost always have long lists of "credentials" and "verified" etc logos on the side or top.
- They love to put the "Hacker Safe" logo up there too
- Almost always have a Brooklyn, NY or New Jersey address
- Usually have shortened hours on Friday.
- Mention a need to call in to confirm your order, or have an employee call to confirm it "for your safety" (to push accessories on you).
- They claim "Full US manufacturer's warranty on all products sold" - absolute BS.
- They NEVER (as far as I have found) have a list of what the "package" includes, unlike legit sites. This is not to be confused with throwing in a "free tripod and case" or whatever bogus stuff they claim. They list as Body only, and go into no further detail.
- Notice the inflated accessory prices.
- They often ofter package deals with random accessories.

They also falsely inflate resellerating.com reviews... by posting fake positive reviews (sometimes hundreds). Read the negative ones and see what they say (not "somewhat dissatisfied"... sometimes they throw those in with mild problems that were magically resolved to look real).

OK guys cut me some slack

Can't at least one person admit that pyonir's post was not crystal clear and open to misinterpreatation?

"If you don't already know, you probably shouldn't buy one."

Taken out of context that sentence is telling you that you are ignorant and should know well enough not to buy the camera.

Oh well, all sarcasm aside, here are some reputable places selling the Canon 50mm F1.8 II lens:

B&H Photo
Etronics
JandR
Samys

The trick is finding one in stock. I ended up with 2 because I didn't cancel my etronics backorder in time (I already sold it to a friend). I purchased the other one from JandR. I would recommend backordering somewhere since all the places I linked to appear to be out of stock. It seems they randomly get batches of them in and sell out quickly.

Just got an e-mail from OneCall - they have the Rebel Kit with 18-55mm lens for $894.22 after $25 rebate. Save another 1% by signing up for their free OneCall PASS program which brings the cost down to $885.03 plus around $19 for shipping, so around $904 shipped.

Whilst the police wont let you file, you can be sure that MBNA is working with the police on attempted fraud and identity theft... as well as anything else they can get. (such as Mail-Fraud etc)

(and you could get the police to file a report on the identity theft issue if you want to push it ...)
