Canon i850 printhead dies

The bad news is that after a year and 4 months the printhead has gone into banding. No amount of cleaning, soaking, new cartridges...helps. I'm assuming the printhead is gone. Just bands on certain colors.
This machine was hooked up to a continuous feed device.

The good news is that it printed 22,000 copies...and because of the way the ink was fed it cost about $100 in ink for those copies. Total cost of all those prints was about $240 including the printer or about .01 per page.

It will be replaced with a i560 for $79.

No way to print cheaper than a Canon inkjet.

If your getting the Canon i560, get it at Office Depot. They have a $50 rebate making the total cost around $50. The one I picked up came with full cartridges too, no cable.

OD Printer Rebate

This deal expires today though (Sat. 6/19).

RE:"Isn't there somewhere u can buy a new printhead?"
Sure for about $86 and it comes with new ink.

OTOH, I just bought 2 i560's for $50 a piece. They come with new ink too. I wish Canon would sell just the printhead for say $25...but since they don't I'll play the disposable printer game.

Are you sure the printer comes with full ink. Normally the printers come with low yield starter cartridges that are 25 to 50 percent full. If they do that ruins there whole marketing stragety they have been consistent with. Most people don't even realized there not full but the OEM's get away with it. Not that big of a deal though because they practically give away those printers to make money on the consumables.

RE:"Where did Macro 2 buy the i560 print heads for $50.00? I need one for my i850."

That wasn't just the printhead, I got 2 whole i560 printers for $48.96 each plus tax after rebate at Office Depot. Thanks to HOMEBREW above. I dunno if the deal is still on. Probably not. The i560 is essentially the i850 but for less memory.
I have both and the i560 seems just as fast.

Canon don't play that game at least with their i series inkjet printers, i560 and above. YOU GET full cartridges. Not only that they refill easily or you can buy decent generics for a dollar and change. I have two set up with continuous feed mechanisms where I haven't changed the cartridges for 15 months.

Canon inkjets are the cheapest to run plus have the best print quality to boot.

You forgot to mention that canon ink cartridges are clear so you can see what you get, no mystery as to whether they are full.

Exactly. Canon printers come with full cartridges AND those cartridges are identical to the refills. No cheating with almost-empty cartridges or special, much smaller "starter" cartridges.
It's plain to see from the part numbers and them being transparent.

I think only HP plays the "Starter Cartridge" game, but it wouldn't surprise me if Lexmark does it too. Canon all the way!
. Try cleaning the contacts on the printer and print head. Use something like Caig Labs DeOxit followed by their ProGold II.
