Canon i850 VS Canon i950 printer.. guys please help me... i have $120 credit with dell (long story... so $120 off next order no min) and i need a printer. I havent had a printer for like 3 yrs and now finally i should get one.

i850 is $169.00
i950 is $249.00

w/ $120 off, i can get a descent deal on both.. but 850 is a hot deal for me. Basically, i have researched little on cnet.com and found out that 950 is faster printer photos and higher resolution on black/white...

i950
Black and White Resolution Up to 4800 x 1200 dpi
Color Resolution Up to 4800 x 1200 dpi

Here is the link for cnet.com review HERE

PLease help me.. i wont do too much photo printing.. but this will be a printer that i will keep until i die or printer dies...

I picked Canon cuz their ink is so much cheaper than HP... BOYCOTT HP INKS!!

I'm not sure if the ink is that much cheaper. The cartridges hold a lot less ink ~9mL in the Canons vs. ~35mL for the HP's.

I was reading PCWorld today on the plane and they have a review of many of the current inkjet printers in paper and online formats.

They have the i850 printer costing $36 per set of cartridges and that you can print 463 pages with this set. With the HP 5550 you can print 450 pages for $36. To me this is pretty much even enough. I know individually the Canon cartridges are cheaper, but they are much smaller. If you buy the larger HP cartridges - I pick them up at Sam's club usually - you get even better pages per dollar than the PC World article shows.

actually you can get imitation canon ink cartridges at around $6/cartridge, which brings the total to $24 for a full set. Yeah, the individual ink color cartridges is what sold me also =)

<~ canon multipass f30

actually now that I think of it... is it possible for you to get the multipass f60 with that money? It only costs slightly more and you get a smartmedia card reader, borderless printing, and of course the flatbed scanner/copyer function

I have the i950 and it does a great job on photo's but it is slow on text. Probably around 20 to 30 seconds in draft mode. This is their new dedicated photo printer and has six colors. Steve's digicams has a decent review of both printers on his site. He puts the i850 4 color printer as very close in photo quality to the i950 and has blazing text speeds at around 22 pages per minute. If you plan on printing pictures the i950 is great straight out of the box with no tweaking.

If you do any amount of printing HP will reem you good.

Get a Canon and refill or buy generics. $2 a piece. 4 for $8...kind of blows HP out of the water. Besides HP tells you you need a new cartridge when you have as much as 40% of the ink left. Canon cartridges are transparent, you can SEE what you have left. No so with HP...and HPs don't fill easy either.

HP rips you real good....

--------------------------

Since you are not into serious photo printing. I'd get the i850. Both are top choices though.

I totally agree with HP ripping you off. Fist i thought u cant see the ink remaining cuz it was black container... later i realized that they make the cart. REAL dark to rip people off.. dont giime how light will affect it HP... those carts. are inside of your printer... no light will shine on that baby!

I think im gonna go with i850... i950 seems too much and i would love to print photos.. but i will probably do that maybe 5 times a month... seriously... not even more
I just got my new Canon S45 (thanks FW and AT people for the deal) but i rather go to Costco and print them out ....

All this FUD about HP carts. Yes, they are expensive but anyone with even a ounce of skill can refill
for around $5. They also include the print heads on each cartridge which contributes to that high price.
Each cart can be refilled 4-8 times depending on the method and care of the cartridge.
No noticable print quality degradation either. Takes me around 10 minutes for color and 5 for black.

Im happy with HP's build/print quality/speed as well.

However, if I was looking for a new printer today, I would concur with what everyone else said. Canon i950
or i850 (which I assume can be refilled at minimal cost also).
For your needs the i850 would probably be best.
