this is an awesome printer and great print quality, my only suggestion would be that you use "Canon" printer paper i tried using other various brands but the decline in image quality was very noticeable. the other brands i used were (Kodak Ultra, Kodak Premium, and Hp Photo paper) but the Canon paper was by far superior.

Great Prints

This is an excellent printer, agreed, but you don't have to just use Canon papers to get great results. The papers Krome mentioned are all non-compatible with Canon inks because they're made for a different type of printer. Epson papers work very well with Canon printers --- excellent results and the papers are much cheaper than the Canon brand.

HP Premium Plus Photo Paper is the best I have found for printing images. Canon paper, however, has continually been rated poorly by the pros becauses images have a tendancy to fade on it.

As was stated before, Epson papers also get excellent results. I had problems with HP paper in that the black ink would sit on top of the paper and wouldn't be absorbed similar to the colored inks. This would produce prints that would have funky transitions from midtones to shadows. This was fixed by moving to Espon Premium Gloss.

As for the printer, I've had nothing but great experiences with it.

What setting do you use for Epson papers? I mean in the program, it asks for paper type, which do you select?

For regular old inkjet paper when printing text docs, just use the "Plain Paper" setting, Standard (or Draft if you're trying to save ink) print quality, and auto color adjustment. Check the Grayscale printing box if you don't need color in your document.

For photos, use Photo Paper Plus Glossy or the Glossy Photo Paper setting-- experiment with different papers and see which ones you like best. For Matte prints, use the Matte Photo Paper option. Each of those choices will automatically set the print quality and color adjustment for you. Costco sells Epson Glossy Photo Paper (120 sheets) for $19.99 and the Canon prints great on that.

Deal now includes a free pack of Canon Glossy Photo Paper (20 sheets)

edit: just a side note, the shipping really kills this deal. Amazon has the deal for $150 w/ free shipping and no tax (depends on state I guess)

I have this printer, replaced a canon 850.
For photos its is absolutely awesome.
As a general purpose printer, its a bit slow.
On pictures tho, its blazing and the quality is amazing.

Yes u need canon paper to get the pics look good.

Great photo printer.

I have the i850 and am happy with it. Great pictures. I would guess that this one is even better.

I too have found that canon paper works the best. I use the 4x6 photo paper plus glossy.

I was going to buy this printer to replace my old HP 722C. But, after looking at the price of photo paper I am wondering if it is worth it. It migh be better to just have prints printed at Costco or Sams club for 20 cents each for a 4X6.

I have the i960 and it really is a wonderful printer. You can use other types of paper but, quality varies by vender. Like what a lot of people have mentioned epson paper does very well this is due to the fact that epson printers and canon printers lay down ink at a simular rate. Another paper that does very well is the Office Depot brand glossy paper. I highly recommend that paper. I've heard that www.redriverpaper.com also has paper that does well with Canon's. Stay away from Kodak's (Very disappointiing - especially since I used to work in the photographic field), HP (Different type of ink system they use a swelling type of paper which does not absorbs the ink fast enough for canon's and epson's), staples, & Office Max. That's my take at least.

For those of you that have used Epson Paper how does an image printed on Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper look compared to the same image on Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy. Can you tell a difference, and if so whats the difference. Reason being, the Epson paper is about 6cents a sheet cheaper for 4x6 borderless.

Torcida, I've never done a side by side comparison because I use the Epson paper almost exclusively (since it's so economical and the prints are so good). For my everyday needs-- snapshots, 8 x 10s, etc-- I love the Epson Glossy Photo paper. When I print large format (poster sized), I've been using the Canon because I got a great bulk deal a while ago, but I plan to switch to the pro gloss from http://www.freephotopaper.com. Use the link form Steve's website for the discounted price.

It's very highly recommended; supposedly better than all of Canon's and Epson's papers. There are a ton of debates on this very issue over at Steve's Digicams. Just do a search and you'll find dozens more...

I have one of these too. Fry's had a deal a few weeks ago $80 for a refurb'ed i960. Prints look great on Canon Photo Paper Pro Glossy that came with the printer. Prints on Epson paper were close, but not quite as good. My Epson paper was pretty old so it may not be a fair comparison. The best deal I found for Canon paper was at Amazon, 50 sheets of 4x6 Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy for $7.

Dang! I've been using Epson papers for about 9 months with my Canon S9000. I have several 4x6 on the refrigerator. They have all faded noticeably over that time. I also have a digital print from Costco in the same location. It's a true photographic paper, etc. and has no noticeable fading. The photos were not exposed to direct sunlight, just indirect natural and incandescent lighting

Anandfan, the problem you had with faded prints afffects many different inkjet printers and the cause of exactly why some prints fade and others don't is still a mystery. The first line of printers to receive widespread attention over this problem were the Epson 1270s (I know because I had one at the time). Do a google search on "orange shift" or "color fade + inkjet" and you'll find lots of info on this problem.

The most maddening aspect of it is that some people suffer severe color shifts while others with the exact same equipment don't have any. A few experts blamed it on an overexposure to ozone, but others argued that it was just poor quality inks and papers from the manufacturers. I never did get a satisfactory answer. The only advice I can give people is to test several different brands and inks until you find the combination that works for you.

I also have a Canon S9000 and it's worked flawlessly for me-- and yes, I did use lots of Epson Glossy papers with it and never suffered any faded prints. Go figure! I even made a couple of dozen birth announcement cards using my Canon S9000 and the Epson glossy paper for my sister in law and she mailed them around the country to friends and relatives (this was over two years ago) and none of them have said that the pictures faded.

Right now my main printers are a Canon i960 and a Canon i9900 and they both produce fabulous prints (the i9900 is definitely superior though) using the Epson glossy photo paper from Costco. No fading whatsoever over here.

The way I look at it is this: inkjet and printing technology are constantly improving. No printed image made using today's technology will stand up to future technologies, so why lose sleep over it? Archive the stuff that's really important and re-print those photos. Every 10 to 20 years: lather, rinse, repeat.

I also got this one here at work last week from Staples. I paid $148.38 out the door (that's with 6% tax). It was was $169.98 - $30 of $150 coupon + 6% tax.

This should be good still since the coupon is good until 9/3.

I love the prints my i960 makes with canon papers, haven't had it long enough to experiment yet with other brands. I too researched the fading question, and agree with everything Flexicon said. I wanted to point out that Epson and HP will say their prints won't fade for many years*, the * being they test with the photos behind glass in a frame, so they're protected from air and light. I throw mine on the fridge. Maybe they'll fade, who cares, print more if the pic was that important. If it's a really important photo, you'll likely frame it or put it in a nice acid free album, where fading shouldn't be more of an issue than with regular pics. I figure I might capture a few pics a year I really will want around, those I'll likely send to Ofoto... JMHO
