I have an S500 that i paid $400 for back in the day (it was the only 5mp "deck of cards" mini-digi back then) but but it's a little long in the tooth (it was also dropped and doesn't work sometimes).

But it looks like that SD850 IS goes for $170 refurbed. So is this really a great deal?

Am I missing something? Cuz I'd love to do this.

I traded my 5-year-old Canon SD100 (3.2MP) for the SD850 IS. This will be for my parents so the larger screen is a lot better.

Damn, my A20 is not on the list. Still in very good condition. I'm thinking about upgrading to the A590IS.

The SD850IS Elph came in very high (3rd Place scoring for "Subcompact Cameras") in July 2008 CR. Althoug it's a refurb I would think it's a pretty good deal.

I think most of these deals suck if your camera is working.

They are giving you almost nothing and in turn is giveing a refurbished came at a marked up price. Yes it a lot less then a new camera, but your not getting new. Check out the refurbished prices first. Trading in my G6 for a G9, I would save like $40. Granted my G6 is old, but its still has all the great features it always had. And in the end I get refurbished camera with a crappy warranty.

I'm not threat capping just letting people know the whole story before they jump. Look up the price of refurished camera first and see how low they are.

I'm thinking about this. I have a broken A75 and wonder if it is worth paying for the SD1000. I have a DSLR already (k100d) and simply can't go back as far as shooting is concerned. The only problem with it though is that i can't stick it in my pocket. Is 100 USD for an SD1000 worth it? Amazon has them for 300.

I agree if your camera is working just fine, this isn't the best deal, but for those with a broken camera this might not be so bad

lol.. I still have a working Canon S200 (not the SD200). 2MP w/ 2x zoom. So good! But yeah I'm curious how much we're saving over other refurbished models or if it's just better to just buy the refurbished models and let my old camera continue to be a paperweight.

My SD100 has a hot pixel on the sensor, shows up red in the same spot in every photo. Also the LCD viewfinder works intermittently. I did see one refurb SD850 IS camera go for around $170 before tax and shipping, but it was OOS. Amazon had a brand-new one for $229 so I saved around $60. If the refurb they send me is junk then I heard Canon is replacing it with unused ones.

My canon A75 is broken. I rarely used the thing and after months of leaving it on a shelf, I turn it on and notice the LCD when I'm going to take a picture is all black with occasional static white lines running through it. I was like WTF? I tried taking a picture thinking that maybe it was the LCD gone bad at first. The picture taken looks exactly like the image shown on the LCD. I was like, "hrmm" and decided to look at other pictures stored on my CF card. Sure enough, the LCD is fine and previously taken pictures look fine. I think maybe the lens is dirty, so I clean it but nothing. I do a search and find out the chip that takes the picture has gone bad and is common with this camera.

I mentioned this to a co worker of mine who has the same camera and he said the same thing happened with his and he found out it could be sent back in and repaired even if it's out of warranty. Because I bought mine about 4 or 5 years ago and it is definitely out of warranty. He didn't have the number he originally called to get his repaired by Canon and I've tried tracking it down somewhat, been a bit lazy since the pic needed was for some items I was selling on the internet and used the camera off my phone. I never found it but was thinking an upgrade might be nice anyhow. The A75 took good pics for a 3.2MP camera but the slightest twitch while holding the camera caused bad blurring of the image.

So, if I was to do this switch out, what would be the recommended best switch to do? The a560, sd1000 or sx100?

Looks like i'm trading in my S410 for Rebel XT for about 300 bux. Even though I qualified for a free repair on the S410 for a know issue with the CCD sensor, the camera is really not gonna be used if was repaired.

Just called them and replaced my 5 year old Powershot G3 with the G9 for $283 (tax and 2da shipping). I have 5 dead/hot pixels on every picture so it's a good time to replace it. I really hope their G9 is built as well as the G3, I have over 12k clicks on it and it has been dropped MANY times and it still keeps on going.

Anyway, now that I'll have my first camera that takes SD, anyone know a good deal on high capacity SD cards?

HumblePie:

I had exactly the same problem with my Canon (A60 or A90, I forget). Maybe a year or two ago there was a great thread in these forums about an unpublicized recall by Canon (and several other camera manufacturers-apparently there was a rash of bad parts-I think the CCD sesor Bob0 mentioned above). They did that for my camera-fixed it for free way after warranty was up and even paid shipping both ways.

I have no idea what number I called, or where the thread is now but I'd strongly suggest calling customer service, being polite and mention that you heard about an unpublicized recall for this problem and maybe they will give you the same great treatment. Good luck.

My repaired Canon since died (dropped it) but they treated me in such a first class manner that I'm almost certain my replacement will be a Canon.

The list is not complete, it's just a compilation of what people have traded in so far. I would call them as this deal seems to be good for all digital canon cameras.

Just called Canon about trading my A20. It gets the same deal as these:

A40, A60, A70, A75, A80, A510, A610 trade for:
A560 - $89
SD1000 - $100
SX100 IS - $125

$100 for an SD1000? Jump on it. I have one (in addition to my Nikon D40)- it's a great little camera.

Odd, your searching skills are obviously better than mine as I could not find anything near as good as the $250 for the G9 refurb. Ebay had some for less that where days away from done and the ones with more bids where all-ready in the upper $200's.

Same with the SD 850 or 1000. The closest I can find is a SD 850is refurb for $195 shipped from ebay... with shipping and tax on the cannon deal your at around $170 so it's definitly close but if your old camera is broke why not do it?

Trading up from my ancient A80 to the SX100 is intriguing, I'll look into it when I get home tonight.

Hmmm... not really worth it for me...

Can trade my A80 for:

A560 - $89 (A nice step up, but I can get this one used on ebay in good condition for less. $89 is ridiculous)
SD1000 - $100 (My A80 has much better photo quality than this piece of crap. This is more of a toy than a camera really) Used one in good condition is around $70 on ebay.
SX100 IS - $125 (Now this one is probably a very good deal. Cant get a used one on e-bay below $200 or so..) Too bad I cant afford to shell out $125 right now.

In the end, what is better? A much better "refurbished" cam that can break down on me at any moment or an old, trusty, reliable one that hasn't failed me once and meets all my needs atm? Heh...

Well, a big thanx to the OP anyway. If I had the money I might have went for the SX100 IS.

FWIW, the A80 is not a sub-compact camera- the SD1000 is.

If you have a broken Canon camera, this deal is very difficult to beat.
