Canon Rebel Ti or Nikon N75? (was: Reccomend an inexpensive 35mm SLR)

(I'm gonna be shot for asking this on a computer forum, but here goes )

Got a chance to use my aunt's 35mm SLR not too long ago (forget what make/model it was, but I'm willing to bet Canon), and I loved it. I really liked the TTL viewfinder, and oddly enough, I liked the big lens & body too - holding my little P&S afterwards was a bit strange. Despite that, I just bought a Canon A80, and after fiddling with it for a week, I'm considering returning it to CC in favor of an cheaper film SLR. A DSLR would be the best of both worlds, of course, but I don't have $1k to blow on a Digital Rebel. I would most likely pick the camera up in the same store I return the A80 to, so my choices are probably limited to the Canon Rebel 2000 or Rebel Ti, and the Minolta Maxxum 5. This is just going off their website; the store may have a few others. At the store where I work, I can get a Canon Rebel G for $207, a Rebel 2000 for $252, or a Minolta Maxxum (not sure which model) for $180. What do you think?

------------
UPDATE
------------

After reading through this thread and spending some time in a local camera shop this afternoon, I've narrowed my choice down to either of these two:

Canon Rebel Ti - $269.95 for a kit w/ 28-90mm Canon lens; 204.95 for body only

Nikon N75 - $269.95 for a kit w/ 28-80mm Nikkor lens; $189.95 for body only

For the 50mm lens some people reccomended:

Canon 50mm f/1.8 - $69.95

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 - $99.95

Any suggestions one way or the other? the two look about equal to me.

You can pick up a Nikon N70 for like 200 beans on ebay.
I think it was the N70, It might have been the F70, but I highly doubt it was the F70.

Agreeing with isekii. I really like Nikons when it comes to SLRs, but Canons are good too. Either is a safe bet.

Check here for reviews.

Here is a review of the Rebel G. He thinks it is a bad body for beginners.

I bought my sister a Canon Rebel GII for christmas from Amazon. They were the cheapest by far, $210 shipped. I looked at the Rebel TI, but it was slightly out of my budget, plus the GII was perfect with the pre-programmed modes. I didn't really see the advantage of a Rebel TI for the increase in price, other than slightly newer technology and the TI finish.

Plus, with the EOS lense system, the lense that came in the kit can work on the digital Rebel, so if she ever wants to upgrade to that, she only has to buy the body.

I like the Nikon N60 compared to the rebel (or rebel2000 as they might be called)... The n70 and n80 are even better.. The good thing is that 35mm SLRs can be had for very little dough on ebay and such.. I got the N60 for $150 with a lens. Broadly speaking, Nikon, Canon, and even Ricoh make good SLRs... I don't like Minoltas - maybe it's just my dad's camera but it feels like a toy and doesn't have too many manual features.. Olympus makes nice pseudo-slrs too (compact cameras with huge lenses)

This is what I was thinking, too - Like I said in my first post, a DSLR would be great and I'd love to get one at some point, but I'll have to wait until prices come down.

If money is that tight, I doubt you'll ever be able to, or want to sink money in lenses. You're returning a P&S DC to obtain a "big lens & body too"? There's a middle ground here, and you're running out of time to take advantage of it. Go to a local camera shop and handle an F717. If that suits you, you can own it for $500.00 after rebate. The rebate offer is done on the 31st of this month. The camera is discontinued:

Features:
  • Multi-Point Auto Focus
  • Slow Shutter Noise Reduction
  • Hologram AF Low Light Laser Focusing Assist
  • Multi-Pattern Measuring
  • Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar Lens
  • NightShot®
Bottom Line
  • If you want a long lens zoom 5-megapixel camera, either model is very hard to beat. I don't know of another camera that can best it overall, dollar for value. - Peter iNova
Digital Photography DSC-F717 Review
  • "...Even a year on from my DSC-F707 review I find myself unable to name a new five megapixel prosumer digital camera which takes better pictures than the DSC-F717, and that is saying a lot."
Steve's Digicams F717 Review
  • "...I find it safe to say none will out-perform the F717. From the high resolution 5MP 2/3" imager and the ultra-sharp Zeiss lens to the robust and accurate image processing, this camera is sure to satisfy even the most demanding of users..."
Imaging Resource F717 Review
  • "...you've got an "enthusiast" camera that stacks up against anything on the market. Sony innovations like NightShot and NightFraming are just further icing on the cake. Despite its sophistication though, the F717 manages to remain a very user-friendly and approachable camera - There's no reason for a novice to pass it by in favor of a lesser model, as its full-auto mode is as easy to use to use as anything out there."

I'm a minolta fan, so would say if you're buying new get the Maxxum.

However, used SLRs are cheap now. I'm thinking of selling my Sigma body and lens (PM me if interested... it's cheap) just cuz I never use it anymore. I use medium format for film and digital for everything else.

I gotta say that I'm not a minolta fan, especially the Maxxum series.. Maybe they have a high end line- but my dad's 3xi (or something like that) is a glorified P&S... You can't even change the shutter speed!

You're right. That's exactly what the 3xi is. A 5 or higher is still cheap but fully functional.

Thanks for all the advice, guys! I think I'll go look at a Nikon N75 kit at a local camera shop either this evening or tommorow morning (have the day off). Anything else I need to know, or any more suggestions?

Any used camera body is good, and the Pentax K1000 is a good cantidate if you want cheap & to learn how to use a camera & lighting.

You should be fine with either of those rigs. The Canon is a few dollars cheaper, but whatever's more available should be great.

Personally I'm kind of a Canon whore, so you know what my vote would be
