Only a few of the Wal-Marts in my area had these left so YMMV. I know it's a fairly old camera but I was looking for DSLR that's entry level with a fairly low price and this fit the bill nicely.

Do you happen to have an SKU number? Walmart clearances are regional things. I checked the one closest to work at lunch and no luck.

This is an awesome camera. For $299, it should be reported as a theft. Mate it with a 233X CF card, and it screams.

FYI: the CCD on this camera is reported to deliver better pictures than the 10Mp on the next generation XTi. I'm waiting for the 15-20 Mp bodies to come down in price to replace my current XT.

I'm not absolutely sure that's what you're looking for but that's the only number on the receipt that could be the SKU.

Checked three. Only one still had the display model out (with the $299 tag) but only had the display left. Not sure I'd want a DSLR that's had people screwing around with it all day.

Probably a few others I can check.

What part of the country are you guys finding these in?

More importantly, if you find a boxed one near you and might consider picking it up for me, please send me a PM. I live right next to a MicroCenter and am happy to repay the favor in kind.

I found a Walmart in MA that has the XT and the a200 DSLR for $299, which one is better? the a200 has the 10.2MP CCD.

zeke: hmm, that is kind of a tossup. They are both entry-level cameras and will include entry-level kit lenses. The a200 has built-in image stabilization though, which is nice. Also, I think the Sony usually comes with an 18-70 kit lens as opposed to the 18-55 kit lens with the Canon; a nice increase in focal length range. Overall you will have an easier time finding accessories, lenses, etc. for the Canon though if you decide to get more into photography. I am a Canon shooter, but I appreciate some of Sony's cameras. If I were you I would find some way to try both cameras, see how they feel in your hands, etc. Actually, if I were you I would buy both of them, try them out, and sell the one I didn't like.

I can confirm the UPC is 001380304962. Just out of curiosity, why is that relevant?

That's a tough call. Hopefully this will help,

Personally, I wouldn't put a lot of weight on the extra 2MP. At 8MP you've already got enough pixels to make a frame-able print. Hell, there are point and shoot pocket cameras over 10MP that cost less than either of these and we both know they don't produce nearly as nice of a picture. In all honesty, given plenty of time to setup and adjust settings and in the hands of a skilled photographer almost any of the DSLR's photos are indistinguishable in print form. The big differences lie in how long you'll be fiddling with the settings, how the camera performs in non-ideal circumstances and the little details like weight, battery life and availability of accessories.

Canon is much more established brand that has a lot more lenses out there but the Rebel comes with a bit of a crummy lens and I think that A200 comes with a nicer one which might be reason enough. The thread I linked also suggests that the A200 is a lot more noob friendly but performs a bit worse in low light conditions.

The Homestead, FL store only had the display unit left. It had all of the components, bit it was banged up pretty good, including a crack on the LCD on the back. The lens and CCD appeared to be in decent shape, but I passed on it anyway. I couldn't find any others in the Miami area.

Just got back from Wally World and ended up buying the a200. I got a big surprise when the sales clerk noted that because this is "deleted" item in their inventory system, another 20% is taken off the sale price. This brought the price before sales tax down to $239.20, which gives me some money to buy a decent CF card. I believe the same deal would apply to the Canon XT. The Walmart in Wareham, MA has the XT, but I may have gotten the last a200.

I believe back when I bought mine on clearance, it was 399 almost 1 year ago at walmart. I picked it up, and absolutely love that camera. Especially holding in the capture button and having it go.. click, click, click, click, click, click. No sense having an 8GB CF card if you can't fill it up.

If you can grab one, they are great cameras, as you all probably know. Anyhoo, wish I could find one at that price. That's is darned good.

Remember the Body/kit lens is only the start. Once you commit to a system you are kind of stuck as the the body will likely be one of the cheapest parts in a system. I wish they would offer one of the cheap Nikon DSLRs as I have several thousand in lenses and flash units in the Nikon and for 300 I would buy one as a third body. Once you get the fever for better lenses it becomes an addiction. You can spend thousands on just a lens. Flash units also seem to multiply as I have 4 now and use them all and want more!

My only issue with the Sony is that there system is not nearly as complete as Nikon or Canon. I used to be a Minolta user, and when I went digital I switched to Nikon, an expensive jump, but I was able to sell my old lenses. By the way older Minolta auto focus lenses will work on the Sony as they bought out Minolta's DSLR business. I do like the sensor shake control, and if you don't think you will be buying lots of pro quality lenses it likely is the better camera just for that feature alone.

If anyone is picking one up and your Walmart has another new unit in stock, I'd be happy to pay for it, and cover shipping and a small finders fee for your time. Feel free to PM me!

I got one from the Valley Ranch Wallmart, they just had a silver one left. I had to get the guy to go to the back to find it. He didn't know where the demo ones we're being held so there might be at least one more there, don't have the money to buy two even if they had it. My wife loves it! Thanks for the most excellent tip Gucio69!

You can get a brand new D40 for under $400 if you catch the right deal. No af motor in the body, though.

Question to any one that bought one of these cameras did this come with a memory card? It looks like in my package that there was a plastic sleeve that would hold a card and looks like someone already open it. I'll be calling my Walmart and have them check the second one and see if it has the memory card in it. Also the lens had some spots on it and looked like scratches but cleaned off. The more I look at this camera the more it looks like it was a return.

Edit Ijust saw in the book no CF card with it. The sleeve in the box I think was from the case for the CF card holder. This has to be a return but as long as it works I'll be happy. This was the silver one. I got this at the Carnegie, PA Walmart. They said they had 2 when I called yesterday.
