Canon Rebel XT - slow image transfer

I have a Rebel XT, and use both a Kingston Elite Pro 50x 2GB card and a SanDisk Ultra 1GB card. The PC I manage my images on is WinXP MCE (all latest updates from MS). The PC is a Dell 5100 with Intel 945 chipset for the USB2.0 ports.

In both cases, picture transfers from the Rebel XT to WinXP using the default Microsoft camera transfer wizard are very slow. This has always bothered me since I purchased the camera... but recently I just picked up a Canon A590 as a pocket camera. The A590 transfer speeds are insanely fast compared to the Rebel XT.

For example, with 100 pics on a card, it can take anywhere from 20 seconds to 2 minutes of "busy" displayed on my XT before I get the WinXP camera transfer wizard browser pops up. After this, it takes several seconds per picture transferred.

With the A590, the wizard pops up pretty much instantly every time, and individual pictures transfer about 3x faster. These are both 8Mp cameras. Connected to the same USB port.

Any other Rebel XT uses have similar experience? Any way to optimize this? This is really annoying me now. LOL I shouldn't have bought the A590

Rebel XT does support USB 2.0 High speed, according to Canon.

But the flash card reader is my current workaround. It is definitely faster than using the camera. The issue is only the speed when I transfer through the camera USB interface. Thanks.

I have the XTi and have only connected it to my computer a few times. About 99% of the time I take the CF card out and use the memory reader. By connecting your camera, you are using the camera's battery and at a greater risk for corrupting the memory card!

It's possible that your camera is connected to a slow USB port of the computer.
Try using other USB ports.

(and, I've made this mistake before, is the CABLE you are using rated for USB 2.0?)
