I just dropped Canon 24-70 f/2.8 lens. The mount ring is damaged (one edge of mount ring is bent enought that it won't mount into the camera) and I'm thinking that the lens alignment is probably off due to the impact.

I guess it's time to send the lens to the repair center. I bought the lens from B&H in U.S.A and I live in Canada thus the lens will have to go to the Canon repair center in Canada. Last time I heard, lenses bought from U.S.A will be treated as if it was bought in Canada due to Canon's North American Warrenty policy or am I right?

Anyway, because it was my fault, I'm sure that I'll be charged for a service fee.
What I'm wondering is how much it'll cost and how long it'd take for me to get it back.

BTW, I'm not only asking about Canadian services but also the U.S.A one as I think both service would be quite close to each other if not the same.

Minimum of $200. If it's more than that, you should get an estimate.

I have not heard great things about Canon Canada though

Another option you have is attempt a self repair.

The mounting ring is EXTREMELY easy to disassemble, take out, and replace. Simply take it out, call up Canon repair, and tell them that you want to order a replacement mount ring. I can't imagine it being over $30.

Once it's replaced, check to see if the focusing is off. If it isn't, you're golden. If it is, you can send it in for calibration or something. Basically, if you replace the mount ring yourself, you'll be saving yourself the labor cost of Canon replacing the mount ring for you.

Last June, I dropped my 50mm f/1.4 on the floor while getting ready for a trip. It would not focus, manually or automatically. Something got disconnected.

I went on line and entered all the data for Canon Repair, and got complete instructions on packing and sending it to a repair facility in Illinois. I provided a credit card number. The charge was exactly $93 US.

I shipped it as instructed and ten days later I got an advice of shipment back to me from Canon in California. How it got from Illinois to California was beyond me.

It arrived in good shape and it was fixed. Canon followed that up with an email asking if all was to my satisfaction.

AFAIK, that is darn good service. At least, that was my experience.

That's Canon US.

Canon Canada has horror stories up the wazoo

Maybe the $200 minimum that I have been told is for cameras, not lenses.

I haven't ever had to send anything for repair thankfully.

I had two lenses repaired by them, a 24-105 F4L and EFS 10-22. Each cost about $150 or so to repair. They came back as good as new as far as I could tell and in a timely manner. May have taken 2-3 weeks total. Overall a good experience.

Here in Hawaii, we have a Canon office I drop off my gear at. I've taken in a 5D with a sensitive shutter release, a 24-70 f2.8 with a broken hood ring and a 24-105 f4 with a strange grinding noise when IS was activated.

Only the 24-105 was still under warranty but they didn't charge me for any of the repairs. Turnaround time was no more than 2 weeks for any of them. I don't know if anything was shipped off to a service center or if they were all done in house.

They all came back looking like new, cleaned lens elements and all. I can't complain about the service here.
