I don't think steady hands can't handle it. If you know a way to get clear picture with human hands, please let us know. I like my S100 (the first generation of Canon small camera) but it is hard to get a good picture at night without tripod.

I know... that was just to re-emphasize the need for a camera to be totally still while taking a night shot.
In actuality, a tripod is the only way to go, with a 2 second timer so that it won't shake when you depress the shutter.

how about the Casio EXILM series of the Camera?
i have the EXILM S2, and i love it. The leather case that they offer is a perfect fit to put in your pocket, and u dont even have to takt it out of the case to take a picture.
defintely worth it to check it out.

Off Topic: i am new to the digi-cam stuff, thought i can use some help here, much appreciated.

what's the best bang for the buck entry level cam? something under $200 hopefully. or if someone can post all the best bang for the bucks in price increment ranges.
i am mostly going to use it to take silly daily pics so i can post them on websites, or email them... maybe once in a blue moon i'll print them. mostly going to people, activities, import car scenes.

not too many scenery shots, but this would be also a possibility.

thanks.

So, for whoever has it, any reviews?

Reviews that compare it to the Canon elph line are especially appreciated.

FYI, if you click on over to www.camerasandelectronics.com you can get it for $340. No clue about the store or the shipping - probably grey market.

It's certainly small, but no zoom = useless (IMO).

Put a binocular in front of the lens maybe?

I saw this camera at CompUSSR and it was indeed very small.

I just have a bit of reluctance with buying a $400 camera from a company that makes electronic organizers.

I was hoping the title would change by now. Oh wells...

Are there any good reviews of the Optio S yet? I can't find any. By "good" I dont mean "yeah this camera is good!" I mean reviews with picky details and image comparisons like on dpreview.com and imaging-resource.com.

Go into the forums on dpreview. The discussions are getting a bit nitpicky - still not as good as the full review for controlled purposes.

small size is great for slipping into pocket when on the go but makes it hard to hold when taking pictures. especially if you have big hands. another thing is if you ask a person (someone who has never used it before) to take a picture of you and someone else, they usually dont know how to hold it and may block the lens with their fingers. had that happen many times with my sony and it wasn't even that small.

i currently have the minolta s414. it's not one where it'll fit in a pocket or small purse but takes excellent pictures. and best bang for the buck at 4mp for only $330.

While Canon digital cameras have better photo quality than Pentax, they tend to be more expensive.

ALL the photos I have seen that were taken with the Optio S are "soft", meaning that they lack sharpness. They are also what I consider to be excessively noisy.

It's really too bad, because I was all set buy this camera, based on 3MP/3x zoom with the extreme compact body.

Ended up ordering the Canon S400 from Dell, which has MUCH better photo quality at the expense of some added bulk.

dpreview finally has a detailed review of the optioS and the casio. casio pics sometimes can be sharper than the pentax, although pentax internals are in the casio.

i think the s400 can beat both of them, except for physical size. i've owned the s400 now for about 6 weeks, from dell. still waiting as others are for the case, but i was one of the early ones to order the s400.

it's a fine camera.

I can't find the link right now but I was reading yesterday about a new Canon that is smaller than the S100/S200/S400 series and uses SD.

That said I have the Canon S100 and I have to say the size is just right. It fits nicely in my pocket but is large enough that it is just as easy to use as my clunky pos kodak 3400.

someone mentioned that they have the underwater case for the S200? Is that worth the $$$$$

Wow flenn!

Great review. SD100/IxusII looks like it is nothing to get excited over. For the price if I had to pick a camera today it would probably be S400.......
