I have the Optio 330, which is this camera's predecessor, and have been very pleased. It's amazing what these little Pentax cameras can do for their size. I certainly wouldn't put it up against a $1000 unit with all the bells and whistles, but as a grab-and-go camera that fits in a pants pocket or purse you won't be disappointed.

Why would you prefer to use SD over CF? That's one thing that would really make me buy the S230 rather than this one.

EDIT: Thanks, bocaboy.

I just went for the S230 since it's a tried and true design. I don't know much about Pentax digicams, although their regular cameras are good. CF is currently a better buy than SD, but it could change in the future. I guess you can tell I am impatient, well the S230 is very nice and does a good job so far.

I actually prefer the S230's design as well.

It only has a 30 sec movie mode, my s230 is 3min
its also at 12fps much lower than canon :frown:

I dont, I have the s200 already using CF but I also use dell axim which is both sd & cf

Right now, Im using the CF for wifi so that leaves me with a 256mb sd card that I use for mp3 + other storage
so If i got a sd camera, i can just pop the card into my axim and send the pic instead of hooking the camera up to the usb port or something.. ie i can't carry the cable with me all the time.. but I can carry the axim with me

but I still like the canon because I have the underwater cases and stuff..

main advantage of this is 3x zoom, whereas s230 only has 2x. And this is smaller to boot

I'm sure the smaller price and greater features on the Pentax will drive the Canon S230 price down (hopefully!).
I don't know which one to buy yet but I'm waiting to see the first in-depth review of the Optio S and possibly a comparison story w/ the S230.

SD memory just kills it. CF is taking over... do you want to be stuck with some leftover beta instead of a VHS? Also 12fps movie mode @ 320 / 30sec max vs 15fps movie mode @ 320 / 180sec max is a MAJOR difference.. not to mention the canon s230 also does 15fps @ 640 / 30sec max. I admit 3x optical zoom is a plus vs 2x.. but I use movie mode a lot and I also only use CF memory since I don't want to be left behind with anything else. Digital zoom wise the S230 has 3x digital zoom where this only has 2x digital. Digital is useless but sometimes it helps.

Bump it on up..
I cant believe you guys are complaining about the looks.. sounds like a 12 year old flame thread over here..

Simple brushed aluminum is not what I would call UGLY. Unimaginative maybe.. I personally was thinking of replacing my s330 if the reviews are good. Still has the voice over if you want it, 1 more MP power, same 3x zoom, and the cheapest carrying case around

I dont see why the movie mode is such an issue for people Ive never even used it before.. why pay 300+$ for a webcam movie maker? (unless you are posting certain incriminating amatuer videos online ) ? The thing is for pictures! Go pick up that cheap 300$ DV cam at amazon if you want movies, i think that sucker even takes 1 MP pics.

Now we wait for the verdict, this could all be fuss for nothing if it sucks.

i've been eyeing this pentax for awhile but I cannot believe its ISO range is 50 to 200.

200?? not even 400? the new Fuji410 with 4th Gen CCD is going to have amazing picture quality, and the ISO is up to 800

It is square and flat, not rectangular, so it's not going to fit in a altoid tin, but it's swaying me toward Fuji now.

with iso200 only, even if you utilize the EV +-values to the fullest, I do not think the Pentax is going to fair very well with nightime and indoor pics...

Yeah, when I first saw the Pentax (courtesy this thread) I thought to myself "wow, this thing is insane!" I mean, it looks like it's smaller than my cellphone, and has better zoom Canon s230, it also has built in 11MB if memory for backup or emergencies, and an actual viewfinder which can be nice sometimes. It actually is designed quite tastefully, with brushed aluminum (which looks much better in person than in photographs), an engraved "Optio," and thoughfully placed sensors. I love the Canon too, but this thing is on a whole new level for convenient point and shoot basic consumer-level photography.
