Canon S300 Printer any good ?

I need a new printer. Epson finally died. I like the look and sound of the HP printers but I want to save some $ so I can build my new PC. I like the price and what I hear of the Canon S300. Any of you have it? If so how do you like it? I am not going to be needing photo quality. Just need a printer that is reliable and works well w/ both Windows 98 and XP. Thanks all.

The Canon S300 is fine, but I went for the S600 instead. I wanted the faster motor, and both the black and colour catridges in at the same time.

I don't like the black OR colour catridge on the S300.

Why dont you like the carts? They seem to be a good price.

Price doesn't worry me too much.

For the S300, you can only put in just the black, (with no colour), or just the colours (with no black). You can't put in both black and colour at the same time.

I have one, works great but takes a minute to "initialize" once turned on (and it's kind noisy when doing this.) If you only print sporadically this is a little annoying, onced initialized it prints fast. I use the auto power on/off feature. Comes on when you print and turns off after a specified time of no use. It does not come with a USB cable, an annoying trend in cheap printers. For the money I think this is the best one out there, read the reviews on amazon.

I had an extra cable. You can buy them pretty much everywhere for $10-15, make sure it's long enough for your particular situation.

I picked up a "GE" USB cable from Target for < $10 -- vastly cheaper than the horrendously overpriced cables at Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. A "cheap off brand" cable should be fine.

And regarding cheap printers not coming with cables... this applies to the vast majority of printers sold today, regardless of price. Very few include cables.

Personally I would go with the HSN Epson 780 printer deal. With shipping and tax included, you can get this item for about $55. Also, it comes with a USB cable. Find excellent reviews on it at both cnet and steves-digicam. (sorry, too lazy to link). Both reviews state that the photo output is so good, that you can't tell the difference from a real foto-mat print. As for text, the printer was rated a 3 outta 4 at cnet. I believe the canon s300 was only 2 outta for. So far basically $65-70 less, you are getting a better color/photo printer and a better text printer. Plus, generic ink cartidges are about $10 on eBay. Hope this helps.

Contrary to what an earlier poster said, I just got an S300 for my buddy's
parents and both black and colour carts install and run at once. No swapping
required! May be a running model change.
