I'm not an expert on Canon printers, but I do have an S820 that I picked up as an "Gold Box" offer last year.

The S820 is a truly decent photo printer and does produce stunning prints on photo paper. It was one of the first printers to offer 4x6 borderless printing.

The S820 is the same as the S900, just about half the speed.

Ah, I see some differences. The i850 only uses four colors (CMYK) but has higher resolution. The S820 uses six colors (CMYK plus Photo Cyan and Photo Magenta... lighter shades). I had read somewhere that a reviewer had noticed some improved photo clarity as a result of the extra "photo" colors, but YMMV.

Canon "S" series are last years models and the "I" series are this years
Also the "I" series have higher resoulution in color mode
I've used the s520 and now the i550 with the only difference between them and the 800s to be speed and also 6 color on the s820.
All will do the job and are very cost effective on ink

I bought the Canon s820 a couple of weeks ago.

I bought a digital camera and I needed a new printer, and after doing a lot of research I decided to go with the s820 because it was the best printer for my budget from what I gathered. It prints excellent quality photos. I use Canon's Photo Paper Pro and the prints are simply amazing. I ordered some prints from Shutterfly and Snapfish, and I can barely tell the difference between the professionaly developed pictures and the ones I printed out. The people that I showed the printed pictures to don't believe me when I tell them that they were printed on a home printer.

But I wouldn't suggest this printer if you're looking for something that prints fast. IMO the print speed is a little slow with black/white printing.

S820 is an awesome photo printer but is a poor text printer....which is amazing and I have no idea why

Also...make sure you use canon papers...I used Kodak paper...printed very good photos on a 3yr old HP930c but terrible on S820 BUT with canon glossy photo paper(20 sheets for $9.99 at BB) with settings at high and diffusion on...pic are amazing....as good as prints from a photo lab....

For photo printing this is a great printer...text is not very good on my Staples/Office depot paper..I use 24lb 99+ brightness...not bad text but my old HP930c is a much better text printer

The i850 (4800 dpi) is a much better all around printer. Photos are stunning text is good. Photos rival the S820 and S900 text is better. Only the i950 will print better pictures.

Basically whether between the two you listed depends on whether you want a fast all around printer that prints great picures for $150 or a 6 color photo printer that does great pictures but is a lot slower for general use and costs more to run because it takes 6 cartridges vs 4.

I have a i850 and I can tell you that photos are stunning on glossy photo paper. Amazing for a 4 cartridge printer. Sams has it for $148 including a USB cable. For 4.93 you can extend the waranty for a year to 2 years. The printhead has a lifetime warranty. The printer is exceptionally fast. 22/14 ppm. The only other inkjet I'd get is the i950 an only if I was a heavy duty photgrapher.

I am not saying the 850 isn't a better printer, but I wonder if flesh tones can really be as good as the 820 with only 4 colors. Just my 2 cents though...

I've seen the photo output on both. They are pretty close...

You cannot go wrong with the S820 for that price. The i850 is a better all around printer however.
I really don't know what you priorities are. Price, photo quality etc?
You can get a S750 from Canons website for $79.95.
This was Canons flagship printer just a year ago. it's 2400 dpi

What he said (almost). I've seen printout from both and own the 820. If I were to do it again, I'd go with the 850. The 820 however does produce slightly better photos. Also, my 820 produces excellent print, but oh so slowly.

I dunno if there're any rebates now, but FYI: I got my S820 $50 rebate from the Buy.com deal (from December) after 3 months. Took longer than stated, but it did arrive eventually.

I would stay away from the s750 I had one and was not impressed ..the s820 is much better...I wanted the i850 as it is better all around but did not want to spend the extra $50..as I got the s820 at Staples $129.99 and used a $30 coupon..it is slow but pics look great..text is good but my old HP930 is better for text

I have several 750s, they have served me well. I mentioned them becuse they are a good deal right now. They are nearly as fast as the i850 but the i850 is more state of the art.
The s820 is really a different animal. A 6 color photo printer so expect photos to be better...but it is a lot slower than the s750 or i850.

I agree the s820 is slower and was intended as a photo not text printer....I had the s750 but paper selection is very important on these canon printers and quality really suffers IMHO opinion if you use the "wrong" paper...I was using office brand HQ paper(heavy wgt/brightness paper and Kodak photo paper and the s750 did not print well at all)..the s820 is amazing on canon photo papers...and better on the office paper

You'd be better off picking up the 50 packs at Staples for $12.99. If you really wanna stock up then you could use a coupon to make it cheaper.

My staples did not have Canon Photo paper if they did I buy that ..Staples has the 50 pack of 4x6 for $12.99....BB has the 8x11 20 sheets for $9.99

I guess I should have been more clear..I like to use 8x11 to make 4 3 x 5 pic on a sheet that way I get more prints at lower cost..although I will use the 4x6 as well because the borderless printing on this print is great

Have you tried Costco for a 100 pack of photo paper? I haven't bought some for a while but I think it was 100 for $20. It's Epson but Canon prints fine on it.

I bought the s820 a while back at the same time my co-worker bought the i850. Just for kicks, we both printed the exact same photo from his Canon S40 camera at highest resolution, using different brand papers (Epson, Kodak, and I used the Canon Photo Pro paper as well). We agreed my photos came out with a bit more vivid colors (using the kodak paper) while his printer stomped mine in speed. On the "oh so expensive" Canon Photo Paper Pro, the photos are undeniably amazing in quality on my s820. But on Costco's Kodak Photo paper, the prints are definitely of acceptable quality.

One of my other co-workers bought the Epson 820s printer, and his print (from the same photo) came out better than either of ours using the Epson photo paper, and the Kodak paper. Too bad it took 1/3 of his ink to print the 2 images and about 10 minutes per picture (8x10).

In summary:

Canon s820: best in quality, medium in speed, requires more expensive paper to take full advantage of inks.
Canon i850: awesome in speed, very nice quality
Epson 820s: awesome in quality on inexpensive photo paper. Still cannot beat the Canon s820 when using Canon's Photo Paper Pro. Extremely, horridly slow. Very inexpensive printer.

I haven't bought some for a while but I think it was 100 for $20. It's Epson but Canon prints fine on it.

I checked last month, $20 for Epson 100 pack, $25 for Kodak 100 pack (but there was a coupon! ) I tried both papers, and my findings are that the Kodak paper seems to work a bit better (faster absorbing I think) on my Canon s820.

I'm still in search of the ultimate glossy paper that can rival the Canon Photo Pro paper, yet comes at a cheaper cost.

Thanks, thats real good information.

I might add that the new Canon i950 smokes them all. If I was a serious "mainly" photo printer that's what I would get. About $220 some places.
Next year it will be something else.
OTOH, I'm more or a production guy and run 1000s of color brochures a month.

Cirekl..are you saying Kodak paper produced a nice photo without pixels...I had Kodak Matte paper and the quality was poor...was this Glossy Kodak paper

It makes sense that Canon's photo paper would work the best, but I have used Kodak glossy also with excellent results. It makes a big difference what printer settings are used. I have found the "film stock" setting works best with the Kodak paper on the 820. The trick here is to find a paper that provides the best results at the best cost if you do alot of photo printing. That said, it has been widely reported that the best results are obtained from Canon's paper on this printer.

I just bought the i850 from dell.com a week ago and this is the problem I'm having and I'm not sure if I got a defective printer or not. When I print something on any paper, the black ink seems to be having excess output. On glossy photo paper, black is the ink that is wet and slightly dripping when the other 3 colors don't have a problem. On plain paper, it's even worst since the black ink completely blurs out the other colors making the dark colors look blury. Do you think I have a faulty printhead? The i950 is probably better but slow for text.
