Canon SD1000 vs Fuji F31fd

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a new camera and through some initial narrowing down I've kinda got my choices down to two. The Canon SD1000 and the Fuji F31fd. I was wondering if people had any recommendation either way, or various observations/comments. Also, I am buying this camera for photo quality, but price, camera dimensions, and looks (to a lesser extent) also play a part in my decision. Thanks in advance guys.

F31d is hands-down a better camera.

It's a toss-up in good lighting, but in any low-light/high-ISO situation, the Fuji will blow the Canon out of the water. Just look at the ISO400-1600 comparisons on DPReview and DCResource.

Indeed; it's a small one-time expense, however. 2GB xD cards are ~$35, 2GB SD cards are $20. Not quite the huge difference in price it used to be, since flash memory prices dropped like a rock across the board.

why oh why did they have to introduce the xD cards? My vote goes to the canon because I rank pocket-ability very high in an ultra compact. every fraction of an inch slimmer counts. Altho, take that out of the equation, I'd probably jump on the Fuji.

yep. exactly the reason i chose the f31fd over the SD800IS for my gf. She needs something she can fit in her purse or my pocket and this camera was mainly gonna be used at clubs/lounges/bars for parties and get-togethers with our friends....so mainly nighttime shooting. Also the f31's flash had a longer range as well as more shots per charge than the Canon. So the F31 was a no-brainer.

Only advantages to the canon I can think of:
SD Memory is 'slightly cheaper'
Low ISO performance is great
Form Factor (small)
Panorama mode (the fuji does not have the 'stich assist')

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Still can't make up my mind though. I need to find a store that has them both so I can see which one feels better I guess.

If you want SD, take a look at the Fuji F40. It doesn't do as well in low light as the F31 but it's a lot better than anything besides the F30/31/20. It does, however, lack manual controls. That is another advantage of the F31 over the canon. The canon has no manual controls while the Fuji allows some control over shutter speed and aperture (IIRC, both allow changing the white balance).

The only problem I have with the F31 is XDs limited capacity. We use our small cams to record movies as well as photos and the 2 gb max of the xd cards means less video.

I have a Canon A570 SI and a new Fuji F31D coming. With all the positives I have seen about the Fuji f31d I have seen on this categorie , Yesterday I jumped on the Fuji band wagon. You can not go wrong w/ any of the Fujis. It depends on your wants and needs.
You will find your self looking at many other cameras trying to compare them to the Fuji F31d. In the end, the F30, 31 or 40 would make a great purchase for you!

I would think you'll want/need something more along the lines of a DSLR for that... or maybe at least something with a longer zoom.

You might consider the Canon S3 IS or Fuji S6000fd for that type of shot. And are going for roughly $300 right now (the fuji even has a $50 MIR). Both are much larger than the F31fd though.

If that's the primary type of photo you'd be taking and a DSLR is out of the question, I'd probably go w/ the S3 IS... it has image stabilization which would be nice while riding in the boat. It also has a good long zoom and take great outdoor pics (though the low light pics aren't as good as the fuji cameras).
