since IS is in everything now in the p&s world it seems, except the very cheapest stuff. it'd be a lot more useful if I could control aperture and shutter too.

Um yea. That's probably why Canon makes other cameras for. No one cares for that stuff in a P&S. Why put in a feature that will just jack the price that no one uses? They know the target audience for P&S.
