996GT2 adds a lot more detail with "Take off the lens cap. See that sticker that says "Canon EF Lens 35-80mm"? Take an X-acto knife and get that sticker off of there with some prying. You'll see 3 screws after you remove that sticker. Remove them all, take out the assembly that holds together the front 3 elements, and you're done. It's very, very simple."

But if possible, 996GT2, can you go into more detail about the 3 front elements, how they are held in place, and what options there are to add back in one of the three front
elements for less extreme macro shots.

The front 3 elements are attached to a plastic assembly, and once you remove the screws the whole works slides out as one piece. None of the other elements are affected by removal of the front assembly with the 3 elements. You can put the assembly back in and re-attach the 3 screws to regain AF and normal use of the lens.

Thank you for the reply, 996GT2, and sorry to keep asking questions, but in an earlier posts you noted, "As far as working distances go, you have about 2 inches from the front of the lens at any magnification setting. Not the best working distance, but if you want more you can put back one of the 3 elements that were removed to get about 5-7 inches of working distance with a slightly lower maximum magnification."

Which becomes another reason I may want two such lens, one for an extreme mod with no front elements in the equation for maximum macro's, and one with one of three front elements replaced, to give me more working distance at the expense of less extreme macro shots.

But then the latter answer becomes, which of the three front lens elements are added back in, and at what point do you lose auto focus?

For what its worth, that ef 35-80mm lens is not very common on ebay and I have yet to see it on my nearest city Craigs list.

But still, at any one given time at ebay, there are a dozen or so of them for sale. But still, getting one cheaper than $40.00 shipped is the trick, its took me better than 2 weeks of patient bidding to get it at my price.

Actually I see at least 4 of those lenses on my local craigslist board. The trick is to search for EOS rebel G cameras or something similar that came with this lens. People are selling the the body and lens from $50-100. The lens just being an after thought. I have sent out a couple of offers so we will see.

Got one off ebay for $18 shipped. It was an auction for a busted eos. Which just happened to include the lense which was in great condition.

Well you have me beat Rudder, I now have two of those lens at an average of $28.055 shipped in my hot little hands. And today I modded the first of them, 996G2 is indeed correct, the decal is easy to slit and remove, under the decal is indeed 3 fillips head screws, and as soon as the three screws are removed, then the front three elements remove as an assembly.

Luckily I have a tripod that will allow me to mount the camera straight up and down, with a rack like adjuster that will move up and down. And with a Canon C size sensor, a US nickel coin, will more than fill the frame once the front assembly is removed. And in aperture priority outdoor, the exposure was correct and sharp.

But the question is and remains, how do I remove one or more front elements, so one lens is an extreme macro and the other focuses less closely but gives me more working distance. Screws I understand, but how the front lens assembly is held together is clear as mud.

Somebody, anybody, help regarding disassemble of the front three elements. I do not want to use just use brute force and just totally break something.

You have to use brute force to remove the outermost element. After that, the inner 2 are easy to take out

Sadly, 996GT2, your post tells me nothing. And what is the outermost element, is it the one that was formerly the front most element or are you talking the rear most that might be threaded? And how do I use brute force to remove it?

I look and look at the removed 3 element assembly, And I am clueless on how to proceed at this point.

Got mine in today! Thanks for the writeup, 996GT2! First photo:

Super easy mod. All you need is a jeweler's screwdriver (I used a tiny #0, philips) and an Exacto knife:

1. Use the Exacto knife to peel off the sticker. The flat ring on the front with the white printing on it is actually just a black sticker. Takes a little work to get the lip up, then pull slowly so you don't leave sticker goo behind.

2. Unscrew the 3 screws underneath the sticker.

3. Remove the front assembly. Done.

I'll probably get a UV or Skylight filter to put on mine, to keep dust out. Someone posted some photo instructions here:

http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/30896/t1508026-converting-canon-35-80mm-to-macro/

Handheld is pretty difficult due to hand shake. A tripod with a remote shutter release would probably be your best option for taking pictures. I have a Gorillapod and some cheapo wireless remote off eBay that I'll play with. The DOF is also EXTREMELY shallow. At $40, I might have to pick up a spare! Found a gallery here:

Nice shots Kaido. I actually bought one of these for $25 on POTN. Modded it, used it a bit. Then sold it on POTN for $50 lol.

Thanks, I only took the first picture though - the eye. Really like this little lens. I don't use macro enough to spend hundreds of dollars on one, but for $40 for whenever I feel like shooting small stuff, this is great.

I just tried the mod with my 18-55mm kit lens. You have to stick the item inside the tube to achieve focus, lol. Great bokeh, very shallow DOF. I put the front element back on...not worth cutting the lens for that level of detail. Although I could zoom in on the metal slivers that my #0 Philips screwdriver took off the screws from the front element, haha.

I got a nice 52mm UV filter for the front:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...V_0_Super.html

Except...turns out the threading is actually ON the front element assembly, so it's useless There is a lip on the inside of the barrel, but it leaves about half a millimeter of space between the outer edge of the filter and inner ring of the barrel. I'll have to find a way to jury rig it or something. So FYI on front filters - no dice since the threading is on the removed piece of the lens, not the main part of the lens that you use.

hmm .. bit of a zombie thread this but

i just hacked a 35-80 zoom with non-working AF

looks like this now .. Tiffen 52mm skylight filter, so it takes lenscap as well as keeps dust out

the two rear elements were easy

had to smash the front one tho

Why bother, just buy a macro filter or extension tube and use it on an existing lens you actually use.

well, macro filters are both expensive as well as adding more glass surfaces, never a good idea

the pics above were actually taken with a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro on a 650D

but i can carry about my 20D outside with this 38-50 on, all day, and not worry about it at all

both were cheap and ive lightened it all even more by removing glass

also I did get the idea for doing the skylight trick from this thread

tho other places described the hack first -- probably --

heres a little album of pics shot before i added the skylight

all handheld, some in roomlight, some with added light from a handheld AAA torch

i did a project at a Park in London years ago .. Camley Street Natural Park

woodland, wetland and grassland,

many minibeasts, lots of birds, etc

this is my intended end-use for this 35-80, mainly as i wont mind getting it wet and muddy
