Can't access BIOS from ATI video card

I have an Sapphire Radeon HD6770 connected to a GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3. I have the UEFI BIOS installed and for some reason I can't access it when I've got the DVI cable attached to the 6770. If I try I just get a blinking cursor screen. The same goes if I try and hit F12 to boot from other devices. However, if I disconnect the card and hook up the onboard graphics, all is gravy.

I've tried changing the "init display first" setting to PEG and PCI, but they don't change anything.

Do you have the most recent UEFI BIOS update installed on the motherboard? Also, which PCIe slot do you have the graphics card installed in? Is it in the one closest to the CPU?

I have it plugged into the PCIe closest to the CPU. I also have the U1b(UEFI BIOS), which is the only UEFI BIOS listed.

That is really the one it should be in. You could try moving it to the furthest slow from the CPU (PCIe x8) to see if it makes a difference, but you'll eventually want to move it back to the slot closest to the CPU as that is the highest performance (i.e. x16) PCIe slot.

I'd tell you to try disabling the onboard graphics, except that if the motherboard is defective you might not ever be able to get into the BIOS to turn it back on again....

Have you tried resetting the CMOS memory and then resetting the UEFI BIOS to defaults? After you do this, you could restart, re-configure your UEFI BIOS, and try to set the system to initialize the PCIe card first.

Edit: Never mind, you already tried my suggestion to change the primary display in the BIOS.

What setting did you set the "Init Display First" setting to?
PCI, Onboard, PCIeX16, PCIeX4, or PCIeX8? Based upon where you said your PCIe card is (i.e. the first slot nearest the CPU), you need it set to PCIeX16. If you move it to the furthest slot away from the CPU, you'd need it set for PCIeX8. Also, what setting do you have set for "Onboard VGA"?

EDIT: I don't know what the possible UEFI settings are as the UEFI BIOS isn't described for this board anywhere that I can see -- I was basing my question on the options available under the legacy BIOS described in the motherboard manual.

This shouldn't be a problem,he could simply remove the CMOS and reset the board. Might be worth a try.

I wouldn't think this is the issue, but just in case double check. In the uefi firmware, make sure "secure boot" is turned off.

edit: oh, forgot. If there is an option for "compatability" or "legacy mode" in the same screan as secure boot turned that on as well.

@Steltek: I can set "init display first" to Auto, IGFX, PEG, and PCI. I've tried each setting, confirmed that the change stuck, to no avail. I've also tried the PEG setting while desabling the onboard video, and that also failed. I had to reset the CMOS afterwards to edit the BIOS again.

@serpretetsky: I'll try that once I get in front of the PC again, thanks.

Doesn't your motherboard have a backup/dual BIOS? If so, did you also flash the 2nd BIOS to UEFI, or did you leave it as the legacy BIOS?

I didn't even consider flashing it until I read the thread linked above. I haven't had a chance to try yet; I'll post an update when I test it out. I appreciate all the help!
